Adirondack Adventure (AA) and Outreach Adventure (OA), Hamilton’s pre-orientation programs for new students, welcomed 308 members of the Class of 2017 on Friday, Aug. 16. This year marks the largest AA/OA participation ever, with 64 percent of first-year students participating in OA and AA.

Patrick Reynolds, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2013-14 academic year, including five tenure-track appointments, 21 visiting professors and instructors, and six teaching fellows. New tenure-track appointments are Courtney Gibbons, Alexandra List, Max Majireck, Seth Schermerhorn and Xavier Tubau.

Three Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the college’s board of trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Joana Sabadell-Nieto (Hispanic Studies), Katherine Terrell (English) and Christopher Vasantkumar (anthropology).

Nicholas Yepes ’15 has been awarded a Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace from Middlebury College. The merit-based scholarship provides full room, board and tuition to attend one of Middlebury College’s Language Schools. These 100 fellowships are made possible by a generous gift from the late Kathryn Davis, to address today’s critical need for increased language proficiency in the United States.

Eugene Domack, the Joel W. Johnson Family Professor of Environmental Studies, and 18 Hamilton College students left June 7 for a three-week field course to Australia and Tasmania. Rain and chilly weather didn’t dampen the spirits of nearly 1200 alumni and their guests at Reunions ’13, June 6-9. Class dinners, alumni colleges, the annual meeting of the Alumni Association, a cross-country run, jazz and a dance party kept alumni busy as they dodged raindrops.

Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds announced that Professor of Psychology Penny Yee has accepted the position of Associate Dean of Faculty, with particular responsibilities for curricular matters, for a three-year term starting July 1.

Alumni will gather to celebrate the start of Hamilton’s third century during Reunions ’13, June 6-9. Nearly 1200 alumni and their guests are expected. A special welcome is extended to members of the class of 1963 who are celebrating their 50th reunion. A full schedule of events will keep attendees busy through the weekend.

In his address at Hamilton College’s commencement, Thomas Tull ’92, founder, chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures, urged the Class of 2013 to “listen to your inner compass and make being a good citizen and a good person part of how you measure yourself and how you think about success.”
