A Levitt Public Service internship this summer has solidified Jose Vazquez’s ’15 desire to pursue a career in education policy and reform. Vazquez is in Washington D.C. as an intern for The Heart of America Foundation, a non-profit organization that builds libraries for under-resourced schools across the nation. The organization partners with Target and embarks on their 15th year anniversary building 150+ libraries nationwide.

Catherine Gold ’14 took advantage of the Career Center’s HamiltonExplore career shadowing program in January by spending a day with Meg Harrison ’91, patient services manager at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in New York City. Now, six months later Gold is a Levitt Public Service Intern there, thanks in large part to the connection she made through HamiltonExplore.

Monica Gutierrez ’15 recently participated in the 57th annual Flaherty Film seminar, held for the fifth year at Colgate University June 16-22. She was sponsored by the Digital Humanities Initiative, and reported on the films and her response to them on the DHI Facebook page.

Eugene Domack, the Joel W. Johnson Family Professor of Geosciences, has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant of $182,453 for the project “Continuation of the LARISSA Continuous GPS Network in View of Observed Dynamic Response to Antarctic Peninsula Ice Mass Balance and Required Geologic Constraints.” The award is effective July 1, 2012 and expires June 30, 2017.

Hamilton faculty Wei-Jen Chang (biology), Natalia Connolly (physics), and Alistair Campbell (computer science) have just been awarded a Multi-Investigator Cottrell College Science Award by the Research Corporation. This award, in the amount of $100,000, is for developing novel computational techniques for investigating gene interaction networks in fish parasite called Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich).

The Sedimentology Lab in the Taylor Science Center is busy this summer with eight summer students who are doing research on various aspects of Antarctica sediments as well as the geographically-closer Oneida Lake.

During the recent All-Alumni Bicentennial Reunion, brothers of Psi Upsilon presented a check for $2500 to the Clinton Fire Department. In the 1980s the Clinton Fire Department responded to a fire at the fraternity house. Brothers of Psi U never forgot the CFD's response and wanted to express their gratitude after all these years.

Three Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees during a recent meeting. The Board granted tenure to Wei-Jen Chang (biology), Myriam Cotten (chemistry) and Heather Merrill (Africana studies).

Jane Rouse ’12 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Turkey. A May graduate, Rouse majored in mathematics with a double minor in French and anthropology.
