Sharon Werning Rivera, associate professor of government, and David W. Rivera, scholar-in-residence,  published “Is Russia a Militocracy? Conceptual Issues and Extant Findings Regarding Elite Militarization,” in Post-Soviet Affairs (No. 1 2014: 27-40). Post-Soviet Affairs is one of the leading area-studies journals for political scientists working on East Central Europe and Eurasia.  

Tim Colton, the Morris and Anna Feldberg Professor of Government and Russian Studies and the chair of the department of government at Harvard University, will present a lecture titled “Political Leadership after Communism,” on Monday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn.

Linda Zhang ’13 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Russia.  A Russian studies and comparative literature major, she spent the 2011 summer and fall semesters studying at Bard-Smolny College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in St. Petersburg and Yaroslavl' Pedagogical State University.

Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera and Scholar-in-Residence David W. Rivera presented a paper at the 67th Annual Conference of the New York State Political Science Association on April 19 at Syracuse University.

Grace Lee, a candidate for May graduation from Hamilton, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Russia.  A Russian studies major, she spent the 2011-12 academic year studying at Bard-Smolny College in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she served as an English tutor.

Associate Professor of Government Sharon Rivera has been selected as a 2012-13 Fulbright U.S. Scholar to the Russian Federation. While in Russia on a teaching/research award, she will further her ongoing project on the demographic and professional composition of the Russian elite in collaboration with Russian scholars.

On October 26, the students of Associate Professor of Government Sharon Rivera’s “Politics of Russia” class participated in a teleconference with students from the Moscow State Institute of International Affairs (MGIMO), which is one of the most prestigious universities in the Russian Federation. The focus of the teleconference was the state of contemporary politics in Russia and in the United States.

Sharon Werning Rivera, associate professor of government, participated in a roundtable titled “Categories and Individuals in Political Science—An Assessment” at the 2009 Annual Convention of the American Association of Slavic Studies on Nov. 13 in Boston.
