Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, presented “The Endangered Migration of Monarch Butterflies” on May 15 at the Cazenovia Public Library in Cazenovia, N.Y.

A letter urging protection for the monarch butterfly and co-authored by Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, was delivered to to President Barack Obama, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at this week’s North American Summit in Mexico.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, was interviewed for an article in The Why Files: The Science Behind the News, a weekly online news source. In “Menace to Monarchs,” Williams discussed monarch butterflies’ migration to Mexico where they spend the winter in select mountaintop areas.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, contributed a column on the disappearance of Monarch butterflies to the January/February 2014 issue of the Adirondack Explorer.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, was featured in a New York Times editorial, “Monarchs Fight for Their Lives,” published on Sunday, Oct. 13. Written by Verlyn Klinkenborg, the essay addressed the threats to the long-term survival of the butterfly.

For the 30th consecutive year the ecology class Biology 237 traveled to Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondack high peaks to examine the response of trees to elevational and climatic gradients. The day was a spectacularly clear and beautiful, with intense fall colors in the foliage.

“Precipitous decline in monarch butterflies linked to habitat loss in Midwest,” published by Environment & Energy (E&E) on Aug. 5, included an excerpt from an interview with Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology. The article also linked to a study he co-authored that examined the increasing risks posed by land development and extreme weather on the declining population of monarchs.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, presented “The Migration of Monarch Butterflies In and Beyond New York” on July 19 at The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, N.Y. Williams was recently elected to the board of directors of the Monarch Butterfly Fund (MBF).

William R. Kenan Professor of Biology Ernest Williams presented a talk at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Lepidopterists’ Society. The talk was presented as part of a symposium on conservation.
