Hamilton students in the Program in New York opened their semester with a visit to Richard Bernstein Advisors, an investment advisory organization led by alumnus Rich Bernstein '80. The group traveled to Times Square, where they were met by program participant Katherine Gross '16, who is interning with Bernstein this semester. This semester's Hamilton program is being led by Professor of Economics Erol Balkan and the topic is Global Financial Networks.

Haim Goren, associate professor at Tel-Hai College in Israel’s Upper Galilee, presented the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Lecture at Hamilton on Sept. 24. Established in 2005 to honor Richard “Dick” Couper ’44 and his wife Patsy, this annual lecture series features eminent speakers who present on topics pertaining to the Burke Library’s special collections.

Mary L. Bonauto ’83 H’05, a leader of the campaign for same-sex marriage and LGBT rights, is among 21 recipients of a 2014 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. She is an attorney with Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) in Boston. Bonauto received an honorary degree from Hamilton in 2005.

Hamilton will name its 175-seat theatre in the new Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts for F. Eugene Romano ’49 in recognition of his lifetime giving which includes a $2.5 million donation for the center’s theatre. Romano and his wife, Loretta, together with their family, have dedicated much of their lives to improving the Mohawk Valley through their Utica-based businesses and their philanthropy to numerous local non-profit organizations.

In an email to the Hamilton community on Sept. 15, President Joan Stewart announced the death of James L. Ferguson Professor of Psychology Jonathan Vaughan. He died on Sunday, Sept. 14, from complications of pneumonia.

Teach For America released its seventh annual list of the schools contributing the greatest number of alumni to its 2014 teaching corps and Hamilton College is among the top 20 small colleges and universities. This is the second year Hamilton has been named to the list.

Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the death of Life Trustee Keith Wellin ’50, GP’11, ’14 in an email to the Hamilton community. Wellin died in Charleston, S.C., on Sept. 14, at the age of 88.

When Caroline Clarke ’14 was choosing a topic for her senior thesis, she intended to write about the Millerites. She never expected that she would research the Shakers as well.  However, with the help of Christian Goodwillie, Hamilton’s director of Special Collections and Archives, Clarke fused the two research topics into one paper, titled “The Advent of the Disappointed: Why the Millerites joined the Shakers and why they quickly left.” Clarke’s research paid off when she won the Donald Durnbaugh Starting Scholar Award from the Communal Studies Association.

Caitlin Jacobs ’07 has been recognized by the L.A. Times for her extensive work researching large cats on various Florida cattle ranches.  While on the ranches, Jacobs spent her time investigating type of predator was causing the cattle to die and how she could reduce the number of cattle deaths.

Dr. Rob Dretler ’72 has been covering the Emory Ebola scare as an Infection Disease Specialist of Atlanta. While in Emory working to fight Ebola and save lives, two Americans caught the disease and were immediately brought back to the U.D. for treatment. Dr. Dretler now says that “They’re immune.”
