John L. Murad, Jr. ’80, has been selected as an Upstate New York Super Lawyer for 2014. Mr. Murad is a partner in the Litigation Practice of the Syracuse, NY-based law firm of Hancock Estabrook, LLP, which is currently celebrating its 125th Anniversary. He has successfully tried cases in State and Federal Court for more than 25 years, obtaining jury verdicts in favor of healthcare institutions and practitioners, product manufacturers, employers, petroleum distributors, and municipalities.

This summer InsideHigherEd published two opinion pieces by Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology Daniel F. Chambliss, both related to his research and resulting book How College Works. “Learn Your Students’ Names” appeared on August 26 and was preceded by “Beauty in Ugly Dorms” on June 25.

Courtney Smith ’86, P’16 has created several internship opportunities for Hamilton students this summer through the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation in Lewisburg, W.V. As the executive director of the foundation, Smith contacted local nonprofits to see if any of the organizations would be interested in taking on summer interns. Several offered to host interns and Meredith Garner ’15, Liz DaBramo ’15, and Medjine Lucien ’16— were selected. 

How College Works, a book co-authored by the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology Daniel Chambliss, continues to receive attention in the national media, this time as a Chronicle of Higher Education “Book Club” selection. Chambliss, along with his co-author and former student Christopher Takacs ’05, will initiate discussions of the book’s chapters by supplying weekly entries on the publication’s site for six weeks. They will also be tweeting with the hashtag #ChronBooks.

Patrick Marris ’16, Mia Kang ’17 and Richard Wenner ’17 presented the results of their summer research projects during the 13th annual Molecular Educational Research Consortium in Undergraduate computational chemistRY (MERCURY) conference. The conference was held July 24-26 at Bucknell University.

Dima Kaigorodov '16 is one of a long list of students who have interned or are currently working with IOS Partners including Amy Marchesi ’13, Eric Boole ’13, Fletcher Wright, Jimmy Nguyen ’14, Emily Rivera ’16, Meg Alexander ’15 and Adi Fracchia ’14. Katie McGuire ’11 started as an intern in the summer of 2010 and subsequently joined the company and started the Washington intern program. 

Dan Hurwitz ’10, is co-creator of one of newest independently run comedy show in New York City: “Live @ the Apt.” Recently featured in the New York Times, “Live @ the Apt” is a comedy show that is hosted in Hurwitz’s apartment. The informal atmosphere has resonated with the audience and performers alike --  Hurwitz has had to rent larger venues to accommodate the increasing crowds. His show has booked comedians such as Zamata of “Saturday Night Live” and Dan Soder of MTV’s “Guy Code.”

Hamilton has closed the books on another successful fundraising year, breaking several records in the process. Total contributions surpassed $25 million for the fifth time in the college's history. The Annual Fund reached a new height with more than $6.81 million in gifts, up from $6.6 million last year, and the total number of donors to the college, 11,089, was the highest in Hamilton's history.

Sarah Damaske '99, received public recognition for her book, For the Family? How Class and Gender Shape Women's Work, in articles in the New York Times and other media outlets. Recently, Sarah continued her research on work and family by exploring the differences in stress levels at home and at work.

Alumni twin lawyers Kenneth '82 and Robert '82 Harris have formed a new Chicago law firm Harris Winick Harris LLP.  Robert is the co-founder who focuses on a wide variety of complex construction and commercial litigation for public and private companies and prominent individuals. Kenneth is spearheading the new tax division to provide counsel to clients in both tax controversy and tax planning matters.
