On Oct. 2, NYC Program students crowded around a Saks, Inc., conference room table with CEO and Hamilton alumnus and board chair Steve Sadove ’73 P’07,’10,’13.  Sadove spoke about his successful career in marketing and management before fielding questions from the group.

“What can higher education learn from libraries?” Members of the Hamilton College community and librarians from the surrounding area gathered in the Kennedy Auditorium on Oct. 10 to find out. Professor R. David Lankes delivered Hamilton’s Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library Lecture, “What Can Higher Education Learn from Libraries?” exploring how library practices can actually inform some of the current debates surrounding higher education.

Professor of English Onno Oerlemans and his Adirondack seminar (ES 220: Forever Wild: The Cultural and Natural Histories of the Adirondack Park) visited sites in the Adirondacks on Oct. 5-6. The class of 17 sophomores and juniors traveled to Asgaard Farm near Jay, N.Y., Whiteface Mountain and Great Camp Wenonah, and to the two museums in the park.

Commander Todd Moore ‘95, USN, relieved Captain George Perez Jr., USN,  during a pier-side ceremony aboard USS New Mexico, which completed its maiden deployment in August. USS New Mexico is the second Navy vessel to bear the name of the 47th state. The first ship was an accomplished battleship that won six battle stars for service during World War II. During the ceremony Moore remarked, "I couldn’t have imagined a better turnover or a better place to be than right here, right now. It is with a great spirit of gratitude that I take command of USS New Mexico... Tomorrow we return to the task of breathing life into this new warship, preparing it and ourselves to be part of that global force and preparing to defend our land."

Professor R. David Lankes of Syracuse University will present the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library lecture, titled “What Can Higher Education Learn From Libraries?” on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 4:15 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center's Kennedy Auditorium.  Lankes will explore the larger shift in higher education from preparing students for their first job to being an institution of lifelong learning. He will focus on how existing approaches in libraries actually provide models for this transformation.  The event is free and open to the public.

Art Rynearson ’71 recently announced the publication of his book Legislative Drafting Step-by-Step (Carolina Academic Press, 2013), in which he discusses the skills and best practices that he acquired in more than 26 years of drafting legislation in the US Senate's professional drafting office, the Office of the Legislative Counsel. When asked about how Hamilton helped in the creation of his book Rynearson replied, “Hamilton's influence on my book is even greater than my acquired writing skills. Hamilton introduced me to Capitol Hill, when I served on Hamilton's first Washington Semester Program in the fall semester of 1969 and interned in the House of Representatives.” By teaching legislative drafting and showing its connection to rule-of-law values, he hopes the book can help to restore the constitutional balance, if only in a small way.

Hamilton’s Class of 2014 has voted for its Senior Gift to be funding toward a planned terrace at the Siuda House Admission Office that commemorates the Class of 2014 as the first need-blind class. The Senior Gift was announced at the Kickoff reception on Sept. 26 in the Wellin Atrium of the Taylor Science Center.

Fallcoming 2013 was one for the record books as sunny skies and perfect autumn temperatures marked the weekend. Among highlights were the dedication of the Milton '44 and Nikki Fillius Jazz Archive, George Baker '74 honored as Volunteer of the Year, and numerous athletic contests.

As Fallcoming Weekend approaches, Hamilton alumni have begun to trickle back to campus. Among the first to return were Dr. Michael Kelberman ’80, Karen McDonnell ’91, Alysia Mihalakos ’01, Allison Demas ’07 and James Liebow ’13. On Sept. 26, these five alumni addressed public health in America during a panel discussion led by Professor of Biology Herm Lehman.

Hamilton’s annual Fallcoming will take place on campus Oct. 26 through 29. Among highlights of the weekend will be the dedication of  the Jazz Archive, a Wellin Museum artist's talk and numerous athletic contests. The full schedule is here.
