  • On September 21, students in Hamilton's New York City program visited the Barclays Capital building for a discussion hosted by Hamilton alumni George Mack ’93 and Alexandra Leighton ’09. Barclays Capital, located on 49th Street and 7th Avenue, is one of the world’s premier investment banks.

  • Among the Bicentennial Kickoff celebration weekend activities were more than 30 Bicentennial colleges and tours. Besides several dedicated to the life and times of Alexander Hamilton, these lectures and historical tours covered topics ranging from the Archaeology of Hamilton College to Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.  Student writers attended the Colleges throughout the weekend to provide a glimpse of the range of topics covered.  Following are synopses of a few that took place on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 22 and 23.

  • Hancock Estabrook, LLP has announced that John L. Murad, Jr. has been selected for inclusion in New York Super Lawyers 2011.  This is the fourth year that Murad was chosen for Super Lawyers, a rating service based on peer recognition and professional achievements. Murad is a partner at Hancock Estabrook and a member of the Firm's Executive Committee. His practice focuses on product liability, health care defense, commercial disputes and environmental litigation.

  • The New York Daily News recently featured an article on Thomas Booth '06 and Ben Preston-Fridman '06, who have started The Buffet of the World, a company that sells reusable shopping bags. Each bag features a fork with tines, each designed to match famous landmarks of great cities: the Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa to name a few. "The fork represents the idea that you should reach out and try everything that's offered in your city," said Booth.

  • Encouraging students to live and work with passion has been a theme of the Career Center this year. The five panelists of the Careers in Entrepreneurship event on Thursday, Sept. 22, epitomize careers based on a balance of passion and smart decision-making. These alumni shared their experiences and advice in a panel discussion sponsored by the Career Center.

  • U.S. Army Col. Maritza Ryan and U.S. Air Force Col. James M. Durant III will be members of a panel discussing “The Evolution of Diversity: Race and Gender in the U.S. Military” on Monday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m. in the Days-Massolo Center. They will be joined by Maynard-Knox Professor of Government Frank Anechiarico ’71 and Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin. Sponsored by the Chief Diversity Officer and the Office of the President, the event is free and open to the public.

  • Kerry Coughlin '11 is currently volunteering with the Peace Corps in Moldova. After ten weeks of job, language, and cultural training, she was sworn in on Aug. 17 as an English Education volunteer. She is now living with a host family in the village of Taraclia and teaching the English language to students in grades 2-12.

  • A 200-year legacy as a small, selective liberal arts college will be celebrated as Hamilton College hosts its Bicentennial Kickoff on Thursday - Sunday, Sept. 22-25. Some 3000 alumni, parents, students and other members of the Hamilton community are expected to take part in events on the Hill over the course of the weekend.  The occasion will be marked with performances, tours, a Bicentennial Assembly, fireworks, NESCAC athletic events and more than 30 Bicentennial Colleges designed to commemorate this historic milestone in Hamilton’s history.
