Members of Hamilton’s class of 2024 have arrived, moved in, and completed orientation, and upperclassmen have returned to the HiIl for a fall 2020 semester that will be remembered as unlike any other in Hamilton’s long history.

Members of Hamilton’s Class of 2024 began arriving on campus today to begin COVID-19 screening and move into their residence halls. Arrivals will be staggered across Monday and Tuesday, to allow for social distancing and minimized contact.

An interest in Japanese language and culture led Faby Alvarez ’22 to participate in the 72nd Japan-America Student Conference (JASC), a program that brings students from the two countries together to research, study, and discuss Japan-U.S. relations across a breadth of topics. The highly competitive program emphasizes building connections across cultures through reflective, educational conversations.

Avery Lum ’22 had big plans this summer to take on a full-time fellowship with otolaryngologist Daniel Roberts ’97 at UConn. Then the coronavirus pandemic hit. Instead of taking the summer off, Lum devised a fall-back plan.

During one of their trips to a thrift shop, Sammy Johnson ’20 and Chad Varney ’22 had an idea that would become an upcycled clothing company they called Upcurl.

WHCL is Hamilton’s student-run radio station. Established in 1941, 88.7 on your FM radio dial provides the community with the opportunity to get their voices, and their music, heard. This summer, student DJs are broadcasting remotely, joined by alumni. Some of these DJs include Dave Bolger ’99, Zachary Franciose ’14, Kaye Kagaoan ’15, Austin Ford ’19, and, all co-hosting together, Tori Fukumitsu ’15, Caroline Grunewald ’15, Eliza Kenney ’15, and George Taliaferro ’15.

Usually at this time of year, the College is buzzing with activity, as summer research, internships, and camps are underway. As we know, things are different this year, so College photographer Nancy Ford took some time to visit our quiet – but still beautiful – campus.

What better way for a musician to pay tribute to her graduating friends than creating a music video? That’s what Jiin Jeong ’21 did, but she took it a step further by creating a video montage of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No.1, with members of the Hamilton College Orchestra, faculty, and others.

Field hockey and women's hockey all-American Michaela Giuttari '20 and men's basketball all-American Kena Gilmour '20 received the 2020 Jack B. Riffle Awards as Hamilton College Director of Athletics Jon Hind '80 revealed this year's senior varsity athlete award winners via a live video announcement on Friday, May 22.

Theatre adapts, reflects, and, most importantly, survives. The industry is no stranger to abrupt, closure when the unexpected happens. Shakespeare himself lived through several recurrences of the plague, writing through quarantine restrictions, and imagining the new stories, characters, and worlds that would go on to be celebrated for hundreds of years.
