Inspired early on by watching Neil deGrasse Tyson science shows on television, when Kalvin Nash ’18 entered Hamilton, the question wasn't if he would major in science, but which science? The answer turned out to be biochemistry.

After reading digestive studies conducted by the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Digestive Diseases, at Yale University, Gregorio Miceli ’20 contacted the authors. The eventual upshot — an internship at Yale.

Juniors Andre Burnham and Derian De La Torre have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships for study abroad this summer. Burnham will attend the Babilonia Language School in Sicily and De La Torre will study in Hamilton’s Associated Colleges in China program in Beijing.

Ben Wesley’s ’16 lifelong interest in cars combined with intense curiosity about the world will serve him well when he travels to four countries as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow for 2016-17. Wesley’s project “What Moves Us: Exploring the Reflection of Culture in Car Enthusiasm” will take him to Brazil, Japan, South Africa and Germany.

Three Hamilton students, Hannah Ferris ’16, Kate Getman ’16 and Milinda Ajawara ’16 this summer participated in internships at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. Burke Hospital, celebrating its centennial this year, is an acute rehabilitation hospital that has maintained a long-standing relationship with Hamilton College, offering internships yearly to qualified applicants.

Robert Hayden ’14 has been awarded a research/study Fulbright Grant to Copenhagen, Denmark. He will spend the 2014-15 academic year studying epidemiology and the development of medicines, and apply that coursework to biomedical research with the Copenhagen Hepatitis C (CO-HEP) Program group under the direction of Professor Jens Bukh. Hayden is a biochemistry and molecular biology major at Hamilton.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten and her research team received instrument time at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Samples were prepared at Hamilton by Kim Bogardus ’14, Jeremy Brendle ’14 and  Cotten and sent to collaborator Prof. Ella Mihailescu for analysis on MAGIK, a world-class instrument dedicated to me

Four Hamilton students presented their research at the 12th Molecular Educational Research Consortium in Undergraduate Computational chemistRY (MERCURY) conference held July 25-27 at Bucknell University.

Kimberly Bogardus ’14 has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar for the 2013-14 academic year. She is among 271 scholars from across the U.S. to receive the Goldwater, the premier national undergraduate award in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Three Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees during a recent meeting. The Board granted tenure to Wei-Jen Chang (biology), Myriam Cotten (chemistry) and Heather Merrill (Africana studies).
