A paper co-authored by Assistant Professor of Biology Cynthia Downs was recently published by The American Naturalist. “Speeding up growth: selection for mass-independent maximal metabolic rate alters growth rates” describes the results of the authors’ study of the relationship of metabolic rates to pace-of-life.

“The interacting effects of food, spring temperature, and global climate cycles on population dynamics of a migratory songbird,” an article co-authored by Assistant Professor of Biology Andrea Townsend, was recently published in Global Change Biology.

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds was recognized for his service to the American Microscopical Society (AMS) at the society’s annual meeting in Portland, Ore. He was awarded honorary life membership for his 17 years of service to the executive committee.

Seven Hamilton students have been selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) that will take place in April 1-3 at the University of California, Berkeley. Aleksandra Bogoevska ’17, Andy Chen ’16, Leonard Kilekwang ’16, Alexandru Hirsu ’17, Emily Moschowits ’16, Sharif Shrestha ’17 and Tsion Tesfaye ’16 will attend. Shrestha and Tesfaye were among four Hamilton students who participated in last year’s CGI U in Miami.

Professor of Biology Sue Ann Miller served on the Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) Committee of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Miller has served as an evaluator since 2000 and chaired the committee from 2001 to 2007.

Simon Coppard, visiting assistant professor of biology, presented a talk on Jan. 5 at The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology annual meeting in Portland, Ore. His talk was titled “Patterns of expression and evolution of cryptochrome and timeless genes involved in lunar spawning: Temporal prezygotic isolation among sympatric species of the pantropical sea urchin Diadema.”

Hamilton juniors Angel Pichardo and Hannah Strong have been awarded Gilman International Scholarship Program awards for undergraduate study abroad in the spring 2016 semester. Pichardo plans to study in the biomedicine program at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Strong will enroll at the University of Capetown, South Africa, in the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) arts and sciences program.

Assistant Professor of Biology Cynthia Downs presented an invited talk earlier this month at the annual meeting of the Raptor Research Foundation in Sacramento, Calif. The international conference was hosted by the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory.

The editors of the Journal of Experimental Biology (JEB) have chosen Assistant Professor of Biology Cynthia Downs’ paper “Flea fitness is reduced by high fractional concentrations of CO2 that simulate levels found in their hosts’ burrows” as the Editors’ Choice for its December issue. The paper is featured in the Inside JEB section of the publication, titled “Fleas Don’t Cope in Burrowing Host’s Stale Air.” 

Associate Professor of Biology Mike McCormick delivered a seminar talk about his work in Antarctica on Oct. 23 at Castleton University. He spoke at the invitation of one of his first Hamilton thesis advisees, Andy Vermilyea ’04, who is now an assistant professor of environmental science at Castleton.
