With the exception of the 2011 French film The Artist, which won three Golden Globes and five Academy Awards, silent films have become a thing of the past. Yet there may still be lessons to learn from this antiquated art form. John Lyons ’16, an Asian studies major with a Japanese focus, was recruited by Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Kyoko Omori to work on the DHi project, “Reconstructing Serpent.”

Lainie Smith ’16, through the Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi), is examining meditation in her summer research project titled “Investigating the Growth and Adaptations of the Practice of Meditation” with Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Abhishek Amar.

Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi) co-directors Angel David Nieves and Janet Simons gave an invited presentation on April 28 at Amherst College. “Innovation and Sustainability in Digital Humanities” focused on collaboration among faculty, students, librarians and technologists to develop innovative approaches to digital humanities scholarship that are also sustainable models at liberal arts colleges.

Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Kyoko Omori has been awarded an $11,000 grant from the Japan Foundation for a project titled “Reconstructing and Creating a New Japanese Silent Film Experience: Benshi, Music and Film.”

Professor of English and Creative Writing Doran Larson spoke about his new, edited collection, Fourth City: Essays from the Prison in America, at locations in New York and California. His presentation also included a discussion of the American Prison Writing Archive, a Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi) project.

Angel David Nieves, associate professor and co-director of the Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi) was awarded an NEH Office of Digital Humanities Start-Up Grant of $59,510 for "Dangerous Embodiments: Theories, Methods, and Best Practices for Historical Character Modeling in Humanities 3D Environments."

Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart will join five other college presidents on a panel titled “Seizing the Initiative in the Digital Age,” part of the day-long Innovation + Disruption symposium to be hosted by Colgate University on May 5.

Hamilton College will celebrate the life and work of poet Agha Shahid Ali on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m., in the Burke Library Commons.  One of Kashmir’s most celebrated poets, Shahid taught at Hamilton in the early 1990s.  Burke Library has an extensive archive of his work in its Special Collections. The event will feature community poetry readings, reminiscences, music and birthday refreshments.
