Hamilton College’s Departments of Music and Literature and Creative Writing join forces to create a unique evening of poetry and music on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Café Opus.

Recording artist Janis Siegel P’16 was on campus April 29 to conduct a jazz vocal workshop for students. The event was sponsored by the Fillius Jazz Archive in recognition of Jazz Appreciation Month.

“I'm playing this out the window to the monkeys... The monkeys are still there...so you didn't scare them off. I thought they only liked classical music,” exclaimed a Costa Rican listener to the livestreamed jazz program delivered by Fillius Jazz Archive Director Monk Rowe as part of his edX course on March 6. More than 600 listeners from dozens of countries and states joined in with those in the college’s packed Little Pub to hear Rowe and his fellow musicians play and talk about jazz.

The Hamilton College Orchestra, conducted by Heather Buchman, presents the annual Brainstorm! concert on Sunday, March 6, at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall. This year’s theme is “Landscape Music.”

The Hamilton College Department of Music will present Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die Winterreise (Winter’s Journey) with Jonathan English, tenor, and Sar-Shalom Strong, piano, on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents the 2016 choir musical, Sondheim on Sondheim, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5 and 6, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

The Hamilton College and Community Masterworks Chorale with members of Symphoria will perform Handel’s Messiah on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts on the campus of Hamilton College.

Monk Rowe, the Joe Williams Director of the Milt and Nelma Fillius Jazz Archive, presented “The Fillius Jazz Archive at Hamilton College: Preserving Words and Images” on Oct. 16 at the fall meeting of the New York State/Ontario Chapter of the Music Library Association (NYS/O MLA).

Jazz Tales from Jazz Legends – a distillation of more than 325 interviews recorded over two decades with jazz greats, their band members and critics– has just been released by Couper Press. Written by Director of the Fillius Jazz Archive Monk Rowe, the book includes interviews with Dave Brubeck, Steve Allen, Marian McPartland, Joe Williams, Bela Fleck, among many others, as well as with former members of bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Stan Kenton. 

The Hamilton College Departments of Music and Dance and Movement Studies will offer a full schedule of free performances in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center during the College’s Family Weekend, Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24.
