  • Organic chemistry research students from Hamilton, Colgate University and Hobart and William Smith Colleges convened to report on their summer research on July 8 when Hamilton’s chemistry department hosted the annual meeting of the Summer Organic Research Symposium (SmORS).

  • The New York Times published a letter to the editor penned by President Joan Hinde Stewart in its June 30 issue under the headline “Don't Diminish Hamilton.” While emphasizing the Treasury’s need “to make room for a woman on our currency,” Stewart pointed out aspects of Hamilton’s life on which few others have focused in their defense of his continued presence on the bill. “Alexander Hamilton’s rise to eminence exemplifies exactly the ideals that this immigrant nation has always espoused,” she wrote.

  • A historic U.S. Supreme Court opinion today legalizes same-sex marriage across the country. Civil rights lawyer and Hamilton alumna Mary Bonauto ’83 was one of the attorneys who argued against same-sex marriage bans before the court, and she won earlier legal victories that helped lay the groundwork for today’s decision.

  • While many recent graduates interested in an MBA take a few years to gain some professional work experience, Sabrina Yurkofsky ’15 is moving straight on from graduation to pursue a degree from NYU’s Stern School of Business, where she will be concentrating in entertainment, media and technology.

  • While the Class of 2015 spent Senior Week celebrating their achievements and impending graduation, a dedicated group of students spent their time training in preparation to lead for Hamilton’s three new-student orientation programs: Adirondack Adventure, Outreach Adventure, and Exploration Adventure.

  • The familiar combined with the new to create an unforgettable Reunions ’15. More than 1,100 alumni and their guests enjoyed a memorable weekend of weather that was ranked a perfect 10, June 4-7. Members of the Class of 1965 were feted and the 50th anniversary of the signing of Kirkland College’s charter was celebrated.

  • Hamilton has named its new intercollegiate athletics team center, a 5,100-square-foot addition to Sage Rink, for alumnus and charter trustee Robert V. Delaney ’79 and his wife Pamela Craig. The couple provided the lead funding for the $3.2 million facility that includes four team rooms for fall, winter and spring sports teams; a satellite sports medicine room; laundry room; and an equipment enclosure. The Delaney Team Center was dedicated during Reunion Weekend on Saturday, June 6.

  • Hamilton’s Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center is committed to addressing “persistent social problems in innovative, effective and ethical ways.” Tsion Tesfaye ’16 has taken that mission to heart and significantly engaged with the Center. Last summer she was chosen to participate in the Levitt Social Innovation Fellows program, through which she received funding for her pilot project, Youth for Ethiopia. That project led to her selection to participate in the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in March.  Now she’s seeking help to keep the program going.

  • Multibillion dollar companies often receive bad publicity for exploiting workers, polluting the environment, and intentionally misleading the public; as such, corporate social responsibility has been called into question. To be certain, not all such companies are guilty of this, and perhaps there is no better example of a company that “embodies social responsibility” as much as Google, at least according to Jose Vazquez ’15.
