  • The Hamilton College women’s rowing team completed competition at the NCAA Championships on Saturday with a fourth-place team finish. The Continentals were making their first appearance at the NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships.

  • One of the chief benefits of a liberal arts education, and of Hamilton’s open curriculum in particular, is the opportunity that it affords students to experiment academically and to discover their passions. So it was with Sean Henry-Smith ’15, a student who until the second semester of his first year at Hamilton had never picked up a camera, and who now just graduated from Hamilton with a paid internship at the Light Work center in Syracuse, N.Y.

Sherman Professor of Government, was quoted extensively. 

  • In The Wall Street Journal’s The Weekend Interview, alumnus Matt Zeller ’04 discussed the plight of Iraqi and Afghan interpreters who helped Americans during our nation’s engagement in those countries and who now find themselves in great danger in their own countries. The article detailed the non-profit organization Zeller created, No One Left Behind, to get these individuals and their families moved and settled safely in this country.

  • The Chronicle of Higher Education, in an article titled “At Hamilton College, Top Administrators Were Themselves First-Generation Students,” (article pasted below) highlighted the college’s focus on expanding access and equalizing experiences on campus.  The May 18 story reported on the challenges first-generation students face and how Hamilton’s programs, including First-Year-Forward, SEAS and the universal orientation program (beginning this August), address them.

  • In the age of eReaders and online libraries, the story of books gets lost. Not the story within the book, which is arguably more permanent, but rather the story contained on its faded pages, in its stretched spine, on its battered covers. Hamilton’s Burke Library has an impressive selection of rare books and other special collections; of particular note are the Ezra Pound Archive and the abundance of Adirondack-related acquisitions. Christian Goodwillie, director and curator of Special Collections and Archives, is currently cataloguing a recently procured collection: The John Quinn and Jeanne Robert Foster Library, a generous gift from Jim and Carol McCord.

  • Hamilton College, Colgate University, Davidson College and Wellesley College have formed  a new consortium focused on online teaching and learning in the liberal arts.

  • Academic achievement prizes, prize scholarships and other recognition of student accomplishments were awarded at Hamilton’s 65th annual Class & Charter Day convocation on Monday, May 11, in Wellin Hall.

  • Five Hamilton faculty members were recognized for their research and creative successes with the Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards, presented by Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds on Class & Charter Day on May 11. The awards recognize individual accomplishment but reflect a richness and depth of scholarship and creative activity across the entire faculty.

  • Hamilton College’s highest awards for teaching were presented to four faculty members during the annual Class & Charter Day ceremony on May 11. Professor of Classics Shelley Haley was awarded the Samuel & Helen Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching; Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons was honored with the John R. Hatch Excellence in Teaching Award; and Max Majireck, assistant professor of chemistry, received the Class of 1963 Excellence in Teaching Award. In addition, Education Studies Program Director Susan Mason received Student Assembly’s Sidney Wertimer Award.
