  • The fifth annual Entrepreneurship Workshop and Pitch Competition took place over the past weekend, drawing interest from alumni and students alike. The event was open to current students and Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD).  Peter Kazickas ’15 won first place with his pitch for The Move, a mobile application that is designed to promote local social activities.

  • The start of the Spring 2015 semester at Hamilton marks the 10th anniversary of Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders, or Project SHINE, operated through the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center.  The service-learning program helps students understand the needs and circumstances of others through work in the community.  Students act as English coaches to refugees and immigrants, and work one-on-one or in small groups with adult learners and young adults.

  • Hamilton College is among  U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. students,  according to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.  The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.  

  • With extensive media coverage of gruesome acts committed by ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Jihadists, the Taliban and the Boko Haram, to name a few, many Americans wonder why Islam lends itself so readily to violent extremism. The same question has been recently raised on-campus by the Enquiry, a weekly opinion editorial sponsored by the Alexander Hamilton Institute, prompting the Muslim Students Association (MSA) and the Arabic and Middle East Club (AMEC) to invite a panel of experts to campus in an effort to deepen the community’s understanding of the connection, or lack thereof, between Islam and extremism.

  • Hamilton’s Department of Music presented the annual choir musical, Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld,  Feb. 6-8, in Wellin Hall. The fully staged musical was directed by G. Roberts Kolb with choreography by Nancy Long and set and lighting design by William DiPaolo.

  • Six members of the Hamilton Men’s Soccer team traveled to Guatemala for a service trip during winter break in January through the Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation (GHHF). They spent a week in the village of Chichoy Alto, in the region of Patzun, Chimaltenango, where they worked to help finish building  the village school. With the newly constructed second floor, students entering middle school will now have adequate space to continue their education.

  • The New York Times printed a letter to the editor written by Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert in response to a Jan. 26 article titled “More Fall Out as Middle Class Shrinks Further”  The letter, published on Jan. 30, was titled “Defining the Middle Class.” Gilbert is the author of The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality, and often speaks to the media on related topics.

  • Some 55 nattily attired Hamilton College seniors took part in a dress rehearsal for life Sunday afternoon; they engaged in the Career and Life Outcomes Center’s Interview Mojo, which unfolded in the Fillius Events Barn and Tolles Pavilion. A platoon of staff, faculty, alumni, community members – and one parent – played the role of prospective employers and conducted mock interviews with the students, who were advised to come dressed for success. Some had been on interviews or practice interviews, some had not.

  • A few days shy of the one-year anniversary of Hamilton and Colgate jointly announcing their partnership as new contributing members in the nonprofit, online learning platform edX,  two free online interactive courses led by Hamilton professors will be launched.
