“Alluring Repulsions,” an exhibition of new sculptures by Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh, will be on display March 7 – April 3 at Hilles Gallery at the Creative Arts Workshop (CAW).  The show will open with a reception on March 7, from 5 – 7 p.m., at the gallery, located at 80 Audubon Street in New Haven, Conn.

Hamilton’s Department of Dance and Movement Studies will present its annual Spring Dance Concert on Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and Performing Arts. The performance will feature Hamilton student dancers and choreography by Hamilton faculty Elaine Heekin, Sandra Stanton, Bruce Walczyk and Paris Wilcox ’95 in addition to guest choreographer Matthew Powell.

Lawrence Chua, postdoctoral fellow in Asian Studies and visiting assistant professor of art history, co-chaired a session at the annual conference of the College Art Association in Chicago on February 15.

The New York Times “India Ink” blog featured a story on Pranlal Patel and the images he took of Indian women that will be exhibited by the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art beginning Feb. 1. “A Pioneer of Street Photography Leaves Behind Strong Images of Indian Women,” published on Jan. 30, included interviews with Patel, his family and Professor of History Lisa Trivedi, co-curator of the Wellin show, “Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal K. Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad.”

Two new photography exhibitions, “Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad” and “In Context: The Portrait in Contemporary Photographic Practice” debut on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art.

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg published a review of The Art of Modern China, by Julia F. Andrews and Kuiyi Shen, in the January issue of The China Journal.

"Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal K. Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad" hasn’t yet opened at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art. But that hasn’t kept ARTnews from noticing and celebrating the upcoming exhibition on its website and in print. The publication’s  Jan. 23 article, “10 Must-See Museum Photo Shows of Spring 2014,” includes the Wellin exhibition along with shows at prestigious institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery and the High Museum of Art.

"American Ethnographic Film and Personal Documentary: The Cambridge Turn," a book written by Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald, was ranked #2 in a Slant Magazine article titled “The 10 Best Film-Studies Books of 2013.”

The Times of India featured an upcoming Wellin Museum exhibition, “Refocusing the Lens:Pranlal Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad,”  in an article that provided both an overview of the show and a review of the 104-year-old Patel’s lengthy career. The Times of India is the most widely read English newspaper in India and has among the highest circulation rates of English dailies worldwide.

On Feb. 1 of next semester, the Wellin Museum of Art will showcase two very special exhibitions side-by-side: In Context: The Portrait in Contemporary Photographic Practice, and Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad. What makes these exhibitions so special is that they will represent the culmination of two semester-long interdisciplinary courses that have been co-taught by Assistant Professor of Art Robert Knight and Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi.
