President David Wippman’s most recent co-authored essay, “The campus war of words over antisemitism and the BDS movement,” began with these words, “The Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7 have highlighted sharp disagreements — among college and university leaders, students, faculty, alumni, politicians and the general public — over where to draw the line between protected speech and impermissible harassment or threats.”

Major national and international media outlets and leading publications from the higher education industry turned to Hamilton College faculty, staff, and alumni for their expertise and thought leadership on a broad range of topics in 2023.

It came as no surprise when the Hamilton men’s basketball team defeated St. John Fisher 84-77 on Dec. 9. After all, former Coach Tom Murphy was in attendance.

Val Demings and Roy Blunt, executive fellows from the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), visited Hamilton to analyze the nation’s polarized political climate in the semester’s final Common Ground event.

National and regional news organizations regularly interview Hamilton faculty, staff, alumni, and students for their expertise and perspectives on current events, and to feature programs and activities on campus. November’s news highlights ranged from challenges faced in higher education to Dolly Parton to heart disease.

Walk through the first floor of the Daniel Burke Library, and you may be a bit surprised. First, no one will shush you for talking — in fact conversation and collaboration are encouraged. Need to take a break from writing that paper? There’s a spot where you can grab a drink, snack, or even a sandwich to eat while you work. And if you can’t decide between making a podcast or designing a 3D model for a final class project, venture into TECH Lab, Hamilton’s first makerspace, and learn to do both.

Two essays, co-authored by President David Wippman and Cornell Professor Glenn Altschuler, were published on consecutive weekends in November in The Hill and distributed broadly on Microsoft’s web news portal MSN.

Lisa Trivedi, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of History, is one of the authors of a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation for a three-year ASIANetwork’s AAPI Voices and Stories Project Pilot. Here Trivedi talks about the project.

Brenda Davis, associate director of Opportunity Programs, was recently awarded the Arthur O. Eve Human Relations Award at the Higher Education Opportunity Program Professional Organization (HEOP-PO) conference in Buffalo. This award is given to an individual who “champions the issues of inclusion, access, and success while making post-secondary opportunities available to historically underrepresented students through their efforts at their institution and through their advocacy at the state level.”
