Six members of the Hamilton College faculty have been promoted to the rank of professor. Associate professors Debra Boutin, mathematics; Naomi Guttman, English; Shoshana Keller, history; Doran Larson, English; Herm Lehman biology; and Gary Wyckoff, government, were promoted, effective July 1.

Associate Professor of English Naomi Guttman will give a poetry reading on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 12:30 p.m. at Utica College’s MacFarlane Auditorium, DePerno Hall, as part of the Professor Harry F. and Mary Ruth Jackson Lunch Hour Series.

Associate Professor of English Naomi Guttman and Burgess Professor of French Roberta L. Krueger published their article "Utica Greens: Central New York's Italian-American Specialty" in the Summer 2009 edition of Gastronomica, The Journal of Food and Culture. Based on interviews with local residents, the article traces the history and significance of one of Utica's signature dishes. This article is based on a paper Krueger and Guttman gave last year at the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery.

Associate Professor of English Naomi Guttman gave a poetry reading of new work as part of The Art Bar Poetry Series at Clinton's in Toronto, Canada, on June 2.. Guttman's latest collection, Wet Apples, Wet Blood, was published by McGill-Queen's University Press in 2007.

Associate Professor of English Naomi Guttman published the poem "After Hours" in the third edition of Stone Canoe: A Journal of Arts and Ideas from Upstate New York, published by Syracuse University. This spring Guttman is a humanities scholar in the New York Council for the Humanities' program, "Together -- Book Talk for Kids and Parents," which offers a unique forum for parents and children aged 9-11 to talk about books and ideas.

Associate Professor of English Naomi Guttman's book of poetry, Wet Apples, White Blood, shared the best book of poetry award with The Origin of the Milky Way by Barbara Louise Ungar at the Adirondack Center for Writing's (ACW) third annual Adirondack Literary Awards. The awards were announced at Blue Mountain Center in Blue Mountain Lake on June 8. The Adirondack Literary Awards celebrate and acknowledge the books that were written by Adirondack authors or published in the region in the previous year. There were 37 entries this year. Wet Apples, White Blood was published by McGill-Queen's University Press in 2007.

Five members of the Hamilton faculty were recognized for their research and creative successes through a new series of awards presented at the 2008 Class & Charter Day on May 9. The Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards were instituted in three categories this year by Dean of Faculty Joe Urgo. Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, received the Career Achievement Award; Associate Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin was awarded Early Career Achievement; and Assistant Professor of Sociology Stephen Ellingson, Associate Professor of English Naomi Guttman and Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi all received the Notable Year Achievement awards.
