Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, attended the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States (CAAS) on Oct. 9-11 in Washington, D.C.

Barbara Gold (Classics), Steve Yao (English) and Brent Plate (Religious Studies) attended the Meeting of Directors of Humanities Centers at Small Liberal Arts Colleges at Wellesley College on Sept. 27.  This is a subgroup of the CHCI (Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes), an international group of colleges and universities that have (or will have/hope to have) humanities centers.

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, published an article titled “Teaching Ancient Comedy: Joking about Race, Ethnicity, and Slavery” in From Abortion to Pederasty: Addressing Difficult Topics in the Classics Classroom.

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, gave a plenary address at the biennial Celtic Conference in Classics held June 25-28 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her address was titled “Simone Weil: Receiving the Iliad.”

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, recently served as an examiner for Wesleyan University’s College of Letters comprehensive exams.

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, has published an article in the book Women and Comedy: History, Theory, Practice, ed. P. Dickinson et al. (Rowman and Littlefield 2013).  The article is titled "Comedy in Ancient Greece and Rome: What was Funny, Whose Humor Was It, and How Do We Explain the Jokes without Killing Them?"

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, attended the annual meeting of the American Philological Association in Chicago in January.  She organized a panel titled “Contingent Labor in Classics: The New Faculty Majority?" (with Chiara Sulprizio, who previously taught at Hamilton) and introduced the panel.

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, presented a paper in Philadelphia on Oct. 12 at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States.

Barbara Gold, Edward North Professor of Classics, participated in a panel to launch a book that she co-edited, Roman Literature, Gender and Reception: Domina Illustris (Routledge 2013).  The panel was held at the University of Maryland. 

Barbara Gold, Edward North Professor of Classics, attended the annual meeting of the faculty advisory group for a multi-year grant from the Teagle Foundation.  The grant is titled “Assessing Undergraduate Outcomes within Disciplinary Contexts: A Longitudinal Study of Critical Thinking and Post-formal Reasoning.”
