The Multicultural Peer Mentoring Program provides new students with a fellow student mentor who can guide them, help them access people and resources as needed, and act as a role model and advocate.  Associate Dean of Students for Multicultural Affairs Allen Harrison explained that the program is open to any new student who wants a mentor but its purpose is to assist international, first-generation (first in the family to attend college) and historically underrepresented students with their transition to college life.

Hamilton College’s Class & Charter Day celebration, an annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year, will take place Monday, May 9, at 4:15 p.m., in Wellin Hall. This year’s ceremony will also celebrate the tenure of President Joan Hinde Stewart, who is retiring on June 30.

Several national and regional media outlets included interviews with Hamilton experts in the last few weeks on topics ranging from the decision to keep Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill to new strategies for engaging younger donors. Inside Higher Ed, The Washington Post, NBC News, Roll Call, and WAMC were among the outlets that featured Hamilton.

President Joan Hinde Stewart was awarded an honorary degree during the 2016 commencement ceremony of Hobart and William Smith (HWS) Colleges on Sunday, May 15, in Geneva, N.Y.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, discussed trade agreements at a conference on “Rules, Rights and Resistance: The Battle Over TPP and TTIP.” The event was hosted by The New School on April 28-29 in New York City.

The work of 13 Hamilton College senior art majors will be featured in an exhibition at the  Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, May 5-21. An opening reception will be held Thursday, May 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Hamilton College’s Departments of Music and Literature and Creative Writing join forces to create a unique evening of poetry and music on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Café Opus.

Fifty-one members of the Hamilton Continentals football team recently spent a day doing yard clean-up at homes in Clinton.  Community Clean-Up day is a service project that originated with Coach Dave Murray when he coached at Alfred University. 

April 22-24, Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain (HCAYS) students visited the autonomous community of the Basque Country, or Euskadi in Basque, in the northeastern part of Spain, near the border with France. They visited historic sites and a museum, and had a chance to learn how to play jai alai.

Although many students receive some form of financial aid while in college, fewer receive financial literacy education. Last week, Hamilton hosted its first Personal Finance Week to address this discrepancy. The event was organized by a group of senior students, Ramon Villalona, Michael Nelson, Eudocia Montiel, and Flavia Oliveira and was “meant to increase awareness regarding steps that students can take now to secure themselves after graduation or even for retirement,” as Villalona stated.
