Kareem Watson ’16, a public policy major at Hamilton, has received the Humanity In Action Fellowship for travel to Berlin this summer. He is the first Hamilton student to receive this award. The fellowship recognizes commitment to social justice and future promise for community leadership. Humanity in Action is an international educational organization headquartered in New York City.

Hamilton French classes visited Montreal recently for a weekend of culture and cuisine. Visiting Assistant Professor of French Cynthia Laborde and Teaching Fellow Julien Ribrault escorted the 12 students who included: Rafiatou Ouro Aguy ’18, Wilhelgyne Rose ’19, Marie Fouché ’19, Kyandreia Jones’19, Jade Alvillar ’18, Erin Bernard ’16, Dani Gomes Rodrigues ’18, Dana Holloway ’18, Giovanna Petta ’19, Kirsty Warren ’18, Alan Yeh ’18 and Olivia Paradice ’18.

The Hamilton College Orchestra presents its final concert of the semester on Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

Zoë Bodzas ’16 was recently named winner of the annual Kathryn Irene Glascock Intercollegiate Poetry Contest at Mount Holyoke College. Founded in 1924, it is the oldest intercollegiate poetry competition in the country and has launched the careers of many of America’s most important poets.

Patricia O'Neill,  the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of Literature & Creative Writing, presented a paper titled "Poetry and Computers: Making and Meaning" at the Society for Textual Studies conference in Ottawa, Canada, on April 15. Her talk included presentation of an interactive poetry generator that encourages writers and students to write ghazals.

Steven Yao, the Edmund A. LeFevre Professor of Literature, delivered a keynote address at the 2016 Texas Tech Comparative Literature Symposium in Lubbock, Texas. His talk was titled "The Work of Translation in the Age of Digital Computability; or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Google Translate."

Several senior geosciences majors presented their senior thesis research results at the Geological Society of America (GSA) Northeastern Section meeting held in Albany, N.Y., last month. Alexander Doig received an Outstanding Undergraduate Poster Award for his presentation of “Orientation, Spatial Distribution, and Chemical Composition of Paleozoic Diabase Dikes on Swans Island and Neighboring Islands, Penobscot Bay, Maine.”

Mei Lin Pratt ’16 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Indonesia. Pratt, a philosophy major at Hamilton, studied at the University of Edinburgh in the U.K. during her junior year.  

Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart, who will retire from Hamilton on June 30, has been named a resident associate at the National Humanities Center for the 2016-17 fellowship year.

Fourteen Hamilton math students presented talks at the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Seaway Section Meeting at SUNY Geneseo on April 16. Richard Bedient, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Mathematics, traveled with the students.
