Hamilton students recently kicked off their fall semester in New York City by visiting the Whitney Museum's new location in the Meatpacking District. On the guided tour, students witnessed the evolution of American artwork as they traveled from the eighth to fifth floor, which features the most contemporary pieces.

Associate Professor of Economics Emily Conover, together with colleagues at Amherst, Colgate, Lafayette, Wesleyan and Vassar College, co-organized a conference for professors at liberal arts institutions.

Four experts will debate fossil fuel divestment in a roundtable panel on Monday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., in the Chapel. The roundtable, “Should Colleges Divest From Fossil Fuels?,” is sponsored by Hamilton’s Environmental Studies department and is free and open to the public.

Prior to yesterday’s Federal Reserve’s announcement that there would be no immediate change in interest rates, Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen was interviewed by Reuters news service and American Public Media’s Marketplace on possible considerations. 

Aptly echoing the thoughts of many Americans who awoke to discover that Sept.17 was a national holiday, Michael Lienesch began his Constitution Day lecture with a simple question, “so what is Constitution Day anyway?” As Lienesch, professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, would delineate in his speech, to answer this seemingly simple question, one must first understand where this holiday came from, and why it was created, and how it is celebrated today.

Seven Hamilton College seniors were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society, at the September meeting. The inductees are Joan Frost, Lauren King, Elisabeth MacC0ll, Kenneth Ratliff, Steven Stone, Hannah Withiam and Rachael Wilkin.

Bridget Kayitesi ’18 was one of 19 students from across the country selected to spend nine weeks this summer as a National Astronomy Consortium (NAC) intern at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Charlottesville, Va. Kayitesi is an Opportunity Programs student from Uganda.

Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald was interviewed for a new program of the Society for Cinema and New Media Studies (SCMS). The video interview for Fieldnotes was conducted by Jane Hawkins of Indiana University.

In Washington, D.C., for a reception to welcome young Hamilton College alumni to the city, mascot “Alex” took some time to protest the possible removal or reduction of the image of Alexander Hamilton by the U.S. Department of the Treasury on the $10 bill.  His Sept. 16 trip included a visit with Congressman Richard Hanna (R-NY 22nd District) who represents the Clinton  and Oneida County area.

Each September hundreds of paddlers take to the Adirondacks to paddle in the Adirondack Canoe Classic, also known as “The 90-Miler” or just “The 90.” For the past five years a dedicated group of Hamilton students have joined them and this year saw the College well represented with seven boats of Hamilton students entering into the race. Jillian Donze ’17 and Maggie Smith ’17 came in third in the women’s C2 Stock Class.
