The Hamilton College Arboretum Association will present free workshops in January through May on the Hamilton campus. These events are free, open to the public and sponsored by the College and its Arboretum Association. Everyone interested in gardens and landscapes is encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is not required.  All workshops will take place from 10 a.m.  to noon in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center (GO27), unless otherwise noted.

The New York Times included a letter in its Dec. 24 edition written by Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, in response to an opinion piece by Randolph College President Bradley W. Bateman titled “The Wrong Ratings.”   Chambliss’ letter appeared under the banner “Do College Ratings Help Prospective Students?”

The New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium, of which Hamilton College is a member, has received a three-year $1.25 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support an international initiative aimed at strengthening global education.  Other New York Six members are Colgate University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, St. Lawrence University, Skidmore College and Union College.

Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz published an article titled “The Expansion of Tragedy as Critique” in Classics in the Modern World: A Democratic Turn?

On Dec.17, Hamilton Research Librarians Laura Festine and Kristin Strohmeyer spent the day at the Clinton Central School speaking to four sections of 11th grade English about critical thinking skills, plagiarism and college research expectations.

Construction on Hamilton’s new theatre and studio arts building continues at a rapid pace, with interior work well underway and finish work taking place in some areas.

On Dec.12, the Hamilton College Program in Washington D.C. students attended their farewell dinner hosted by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack ’72, and Kirkland alumnae Christie Vilsack K’72 and Barbara Stein K’72.  Tom Vilsack is  former Governor of Iowa. Christie Vilsack is senior advisor for international education at USAID, and Barbara Stein is director of strategic partnerships for the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, and Associate Professor of Economics Jeff Pliskin co-authored a paper published in Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory & Labor-Managed Firms, 2013.

Scholar-in-Residence David W. Rivera presented two series of lectures from Nov. 22 to Dec. 3 in Moscow. The invited lectures focused on findings of ongoing research he is conducting with Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, recently presented lectures in Moscow and Vienna.
