Dan Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, presented “How College Works - and How to Make It Work Better” on Feb. 19 at Lewis & Clark College. He discussed what colleges can do to work better and improve student success.

Drawing from How College Works (Harvard University Press, 2014), a book he co-authored with his former student Christopher Takacs ’05, Chambliss examined how students’ success is improved by the quality of their personal relationships with peers and with faculty. He described how colleges can promote these relationships with considerations such as faculty office location, course scheduling, department events and residence hall design.
