The virtual video “Depicting Mexico and Modernism: Gordo by Gus Arriola,” an exhibition curated by Director of Academic Technology, Teaching, and Research Services Nhora Serrano, was recently released. The video is narrated by Serrano and features scenes from the exhibition and interviews with comics scholars, historians, and creators.
The exhibition was the first retrospective on “Gordo,” a syndicated comic strip that ran in newspapers from 1941 to 1985, and featured works on loan from private collections and from the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University. “Gordo” creator Gus Arriola was the first Latinx syndicated cartoonist in the U.S. The bilingual exhibition opened in December 2023 at The Ohio State University and ran through early May.
Of the video’s release Serrano said, “I am so glad more people can be exposed to the brilliance and importance of Gus Arriola and his extraordinary/visionary cartoonist work.”
