Nhora Lucía Serrano.

Director of Academic Technology, Teaching, and Research Services Nhora Serrano was a primary author of the Modern Language Association’s (MLA) “Guidelines for Evaluating Digital Scholarship,” published recently on the MLA website.

Serrano, an appointed member of the MLA Committee on Information Technology (CIT), worked with other CIT members for the past three years to produce the document. Serrano says the group hopes “that it will be helpful for departments and institutions in developing effective and fair evaluation methods for hiring, reappointing, tenuring, and promoting scholars in the area of innovative digital scholarship.”

The CIT notes that the guidelines “may also assist in other aspects of evaluating digital scholarship, such as reviewing funding or fellowship proposals, and training and professionalizing graduate students engaged in digital work.”

According to its website, the MLA was founded in 1883, and as “a leading advocate for the humanities … promotes the study, teaching, and understanding of languages, literatures, and culture.”

Serrano has been a CIT member since 2022, serving as chair since 2023. Her tenure as chair runs through July 2025.
