Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus and Catherine Schmitt ’24 were recently awarded an American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) Grant for Innovation in Teaching for the Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy (HCSPiP).

Since 2018, HCSPiP has brought college students, teachers, and alumni tutors to Hamilton for a two-week laboratory of pedagogical innovation in philosophy. Schmitt serves as the assistant director of the program and wrote the grant with Marcus, the program director.

The grant will be used to hire an inclusivity consultant in order to help promote equity among student voices in the program and help to place diverse perspectives at the center of the curriculum. The consultant will help the program instructors create productive learning spaces within the program and take the skills learned during the workshop back to their home institutions.

“This is our first external grant for the program and I am thrilled!,” Marcus said.

Help us provide an accessible education, offer innovative resources and programs, and foster intellectual exploration.
