In preparation for a new volume titled Genealogy: A Genealogy (ed. Erlenbusch-Anderson and Lorenzini) with Columbia University Press, A. Todd Franklin, professor of philosophy and Africana Studies, and other contributors met online Jan. 12 and 13 for a workshop devoted to each author presenting their chapter and discussing it with fellow contributors.
Franklin’s chapter is titled “The Gospel According to Baldwin: Prophetic Genealogy as Social Praxis.” In it, he frames James Baldwin as a Black prophet who historicizes racist social realities so as to counteract the pernicious ways in which Black people have been socially positioned and conditioned.
