Pottery by Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Grace Troxell is featured in this pot is made of earth and when it breaks, my father laughs, a solo exhibition at Open Source Gallery in Brooklyn.
According to a press release announcing the show, “the title comes from a Pennsylvania Dutch flower pot made by Samuel Troxel in 1828 with the inscription: ‘this pot is made of earth, and when it breaks the potter laughs.’” Troxell notes that Samuel Troxel may be a distant relative.
Troxell uses the language of clay to explore the interactions – between human and vegetable, vessel and rupture, family and stranger – at play in her work.
The show runs through Oct. 11 at Open Source, located at 306 17th St., Brooklyn, N.Y. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m.
