Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas delivered the keynote address at a public conference hosted by the University of Guyana. The conference, "The American Revolution and the Caribbean: Liberty, Empire, Slavery, and Independence in the Atlantic World," examined the interconnected histories of revolution and freedom.
Westmaas's presentation, "The Caribbean/Americas Afterlife of the Haitian Revolution: Slavery, Plantations, Reparations, and Sovereignty," explored the revolution's lasting impact on the Caribbean, the Americas, and the Atlantic world. He argued that Haiti reshaped ideas of emancipation and sovereignty while examining its struggle for international recognition, post-independence isolation, and continuing significance for debates and colonialism and reparations.
