Digital Humanities Initiative co-directors Angel David Nieves and Janet Simons presented at the annual American Association of Colleges and Universities 2012 meeting in Washington, D.C., in January. The presentation was titled "Curricular Connections to Humanities Research: DHi's CLASS Program."

Don Sawyer, director of Syracuse University’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, will give the Black History Month keynote speech at Hamilton College.  His lecture, titled “Hip-Hop Culture, Perceived Anti-Intellectualism, and Young Black Males,” will take place on Monday, Feb. 6, at 4:15 p.m., in the Kirner-Johnson Building’s Bradford Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

"Stuffed" was the comment most commonly heard from students in the interdisciplinary Food for Thought class and the Kitchen Culture: Women, Gender and the Politics of Food class at the conclusion of the bicentennial Galaxy Dinner on Feb. 1. Despite being handicapped by a forkless table-setting, students gamely consumed a sumptuous serving of early 1800s dishes. The event was held with a bit of historical staging -- candlelight, fire roaring in the hearth,wooden utensils -- in the Great Room of Philip Spencer House.

Hamilton’s Program in New York students along with faculty director Daniel Chambliss and co-director Susan Morgan celebrated Chinese New Year at Nancy Lee's Pig Heaven, before taking the first guided group tour given of the newly opened American Art Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Jan. 25. This semester’s program theme is Health and Health Care in a Global Society.

During this bicentennial year of Hamilton College, a unique and entertaining way of looking back at the college’s history is through the eyes of Half-Century class annalists. Their letters, invaluable in recording Hamilton’s past and recounting life on the Hill, have now been posted on a new web page. The five most recent are also available as videos.

Three photographs from Assistant Professor of Art Robert Knight's Class of 2015 series will be included in a MassArt Alumni Show at the Fountain Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y., from Feb. 4 - March 3.  The Class of 2015 project is a longitudinal portrait project utilizing photography and video to examine identity development in 39 members of Hamilton's Class of 2015. 

Lauren Howe ’12 spent the fall semester conducting an independent study project in which she researched and recorded campus food purchasing at Hamilton.  She collaborated with Bon Appétit and Real Food Challenge (RFC), a student-led organization based in Boston advocating “real food” on more college campuses.

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi, and St. Lawrence University Professor of Philosophy Erin McCarthy, co-editors of ASIANetwork Exchange: a Journal of Asian Studies in the Liberal Arts, have published their first online issue of the journal. 

Ronald Pressman ’80, a Hamilton College charter trustee, has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer of TIAA-CREF, a leading financial services provider.  Pressman is a 32-year veteran of General Electric, where he most recently served as president and CEO of GE Capital Real Estate and as director of the GE Capital Services and GE Capital Corporation boards. He will begin his new duties on January 30 and will be based in New York City.

An op-ed written by Peter Maher ’13 was published on Jan. 22 by The Tribune Papers of Asheville, N.C. The piece, titled “The Lone Wolf: Why singular terrorists pose the greatest threat,” was written as an assignment in a fall semester Government class, Global Challenges, taught by Ambassador Edward “Ned”  Walker Jr. ’62. Maher then submitted it to the paper for consideration.
