Heather Mac Donald, the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute in New York City, will present a lecture based on her book “Are Cops Racist?” on Wednesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The lecture is free and open to the public and is hosted by the Hamilton Republicans.

Gretha Suarez ’15 has been awarded a Fulbright Research Grant to India. Through her project, Gender and Public Space: Politics of Women’s Safety in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, she will spend the 2015-16 academic year studying how urban infrastructure regulates women’s presence in Mumbai and Ahmedabad’s public spaces.  These cities provide a platform to examine the conditions of women’s safety and rights to public space by comparing infrastructure that facilitates access.

Hamilton will host a faculty panel discussion, “Europe in Crisis,” on Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Lisbeth “Liz” DaBramo and Erika Marte, both candidates for May graduation from Hamilton, will travel the world  as Thomas J. Watson Fellows for 2015-16. DaBramo’s project is titled “Water Ways: An Exploration of Water Sustainability Strategies,” and Marte’s is “The Faces and Functions of Educational Volunteerism in the 21st Century.”

Hamilton students might be nearing the end of their spring break but they’ll have plenty to look forward to as the spring semester resumes on March 30.  The college calendar is loaded with upcoming lectures, performance and events from now until the end of the semester. Lots of “oohs” and “ahhs” and a couple shrieks were heard in the Taylor Science Center during spring break when two groups of local third-grade students visited for some hands-on science learning with the help of Hamilton’s science faculty. For more than 20 years, Professor of Biology Dave Gapp has organized “Science Exploration Days” which bring classes of elementary school students to Hamilton for guided tours and short lessons in various areas of science.

Fifty-two Hamilton students will have a new home on the Hill when they return for the fall 2015 semester. Conversion of the former Minor Theater to a residence hall is a bit ahead of schedule, with completion expected in mid-July and move-in around Aug. 1, according to project manager Senior Associate Director of Physical Plant Frank Marsicane.  When remodeling is finished the building will house 52 students in 10 suites on three floors.

Melanie Miller, a candidate for May graduation from Hamilton, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Turkey. A psychology major at Hamilton, she studied abroad in Durban, South Africa in 2014.  According to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Hamilton was a top producer of U.S. Fulbright students in 2014-15.

Recipients of the 2015 Emerson Summer Collaborative Research Grants were recently announced by the Dean of Faculty's office. Created in 1997, the Emerson Foundation Grant program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. Twenty-five Hamilton students and 23 faculty members will be working on the following projects this summer. 

The first week of Hamilton’s spring break is over and the first five Alternative Spring Break trips have returned. A new trip this year went to Philadelphia where students worked with the Urban Tree Connection and with the Nationalities Service Center.
