Twenty Hamilton students and Director of Outdoor Leadership Andrew Jillings competed in the 31st annual Adirondack Canoe Classic known as “the 90-miler,” a three-day canoe race from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, held Sept. 5-7.

John Dovidio, the Carl Iver Hovland Professor of Psychology at Yale University, will present a lecture titled “The Subtlety of Contemporary Racism:  Implications for Intergroup Perceptions, Interaction, and Policy” on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 4:15 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Members of Hamilton’s class of 2018 arrive on campus to begin New Student Orientation on Saturday, Aug. 23. More than 280 first-year students took part in pre-orientation programs Adirondack Adventure, Outreach Adventure and the new eXploration Adventure and returned to campus on Friday. The remaining members of the class will arrive and move in for New Student Orientation, which begins on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Three longtime members of Hamilton’s science faculty retired during the last academic year. Eugene Domack, Timothy Elgren and Ernest Williams had a combined 79 years of service at Hamilton.

Patrick Reynolds, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2014-15 academic year, including six tenure-track appointments, 24 visiting professors and instructors, and three teaching fellows.

Adirondack Adventure, Outreach Adventure and eXploration Adventure Hamilton’s pre-orientation programs for new students, welcomed 283 members of the Class of 2018 on Friday, Aug. 15.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Hamilton College $250,000 to support the development and production of online offerings through edX.

Hamilton will welcome back more than 1000 alumni and their guests when it hosts the college’s annual Reunion Weekend, this year on Thursday-Sunday, June 5-8. 

The Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center recently announced the 2014 Levitt Summer Research Fellows. To enhance student research around issues of public affairs, the Levitt Center funds student-faculty research through its Levitt Research Fellows Program. The program is open to rising juniors and seniors who wish to spend the summer working in collaboration with a faculty member on an issue related to public affairs. Following are this year’s recipients.

Recipients of the 2014 Emerson Summer Grants were recently announced. Created in 1997, the  program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. The recipients, covering a range of topics, are exploring fieldwork, laboratory and library research, and the development of teaching materials. The students will make public presentations of their research throughout the academic year.
