Director of Special Collections Christian Goodwillie has published two articles and a book this spring. Hancock Shaker Village: A History and Guidebook (co-authored with John Harlow Ott) presents new research into the former village site of the Hancock Shaker community, now a museum in western Massachusetts.

Ernest Williams, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Biology, presented a gallery talk on June 19 at the Arts Center in Old Forge, N.Y.

Indiana University Press has just released Associate Professor of  Anthropology Chaise LaDousa’s book, House Signs and Collegiate Fun: Sex, Race, and Faith in a College Town.  The book is based on three years of ethnographic and historical research in which students at  Miami University of Ohio collaborated with LaDousa to explore the ways in which "house signs" such as Liquor Up Front, Poker in the Rear, Plantation, and Crib of the Rib became foci of college culture.

William Billiter, director of foundation, corporate and government relations, has written a book of poetry titled Stutter (University of Georgia Press, April 1, 2011). Stutter was a winner in the 2010 National Poetry Series, an award program judged by distinguished national poets.

Associate Professor of Sociology Yvonne Zylan is the author of a new book, States of Passion: Law, Identity, and Social Construction of Desire (Oxford University Press, March, 2011).

Torchbearers of of Democracy: African American Soldiers in the World War I Era by Associate Professor of History Chad L. Williams has been selected by the Organization of American Historians (OAH) for the 2011 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award which is given annually for the best book on any aspect of the struggle for civil rights in the United State. Williams’ book was also selected by the Society for Military History to receive its 2011 Distinguished Book Award for United States History.

Professor of French John C. O’Neal has authored a new book, The Progressive Poetics of Confusion in the French Enlightenment, published by the University of Delaware Press. 

Hamilton College Visiting Assistant Professor of English Jane Springer has been named one of 10 recipients of the 2010 Whiting Writers’ Award by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation. The awards of $50,000 each have been given annually since 1985 to writers of exceptional talent and promise in early career.

A new work by Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart – The Enlightenment of age: Women, letters and growing old in eighteenth-century France – has been published by the Voltaire Foundation of the University of Oxford.
