Most people would not devote much time or energy into thinking about a bookshelf. For John Freyer ’95, however, this was not the case. Members of the Hamilton community gathered in the Chapel on Sept. 24 to hear Freyer, an assistant professor of photography at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History, discuss his passionate fascination of objects and how they define who we are as individuals.

Alumnus John Freyer ’95 , who decided to free himself from possessions and sell everything he owned on the Internet in a project called “All My Life for Sale,” will lecture at Hamilton on Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., in the Chapel.

Can you imagine waking up at 6 a.m. on a Saturday and making a trip from Clinton to New York City and back in the same day? That’s exactly what a group of highly motivated Hamilton students did on September 15 as they attended the Career Center’s first Finance Bootcamp. Jennifer Hill ’87, CFO of Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s investment bank, as well as Candace Browning P’10, the head of Global Research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, hosted the event in New York at the Bank of America Tower.

An exhibition featuring illustrations by Thomas Nast and Winslow Homer from the collection of Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus Jay G. Williams '54 is on view at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown.  “On the Home Front: New York in the Civil War” displays articles from the Civil War era and will be open through Dec. 31.

Nathaniel Hurd '99, president of the board of directors of Education for Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC), is working with a leading education expert to bring Photovoice to 20 Iraqi young adults (ages 10-25). Photovoice combines photography and social action, asking participants to share their experiences through a photographic narrative and start a discussion.  Photovoice has positively impacted communities including inner-city Cleveland, Haiti, and Sierra Leone.

Twelve juniors have begun the fall 2012 Program in Washington, which combines academic seminars, independent research and internships. Internships this semester include Department of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency, Democratic National Committee, and a variety of thinks tanks, consulting firms, and non-profits.   The semester  includes a co-curricular program of meetings with policymakers and excursions to take advantage of Washington’s educational and cultural assets. The program is directed this semester by Professor of Government David Paris ’71.

An article co-authored by Robert Kantrowitz ’82, professor and chair of mathematics, appears in the September 2012 issue of College Mathematics Journal, a publication of the Mathematical Association of America.

Ron Kim '02 is running for the New York State Assembly. In a statement he said, “Public service is about protecting the most vulnerable among us while ensuring that opportunity exists for all our citizens. As an immigrant and the son of a Vietnam veteran, I have seen just how much is possible in this great country. I am running for the New York State Assembly to be a fierce advocate for great schools and good jobs for Queens."

The Rev. Sandy Webb ’05 serves as the first Fire-EMS chaplain in years for the Roanoke fire department.

Patrick Reynolds, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2012-13 academic year, including two tenure-track appointments, 25 visiting professors and instructors, and four teaching fellows. New tenure-track appointments are Daniel Barth and Gbemende Johnson.
