Douglas Raybeck, professor of anthropology emeritus, contributed a chapter in a new book titled Extraterrestrial Altruism. The chapter, “Predator: Prey Models and Contact Considerations,” focuses on whether or not “an intelligent alien will be beneficent, neutral or hostile.”

Utica has the fourth highest concentration of refugees of all cities in the United States. Many of these immigrants struggle to adjust to American culture and language. Through a Kirkland Summer Associate project, Maggie Haag ’15 is trying new ways to use technology to teach refugees English and help them to understand American culture.

Assistant Professor of Anthropology Nathan Goodale and Visiting Instructor Alissa Nauman presented “Digging into First Nations history in the Columbia Valley: Lessons from an archaeological dig near Lemon Creek” at Revelstoke Museum in Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada, on Monday, July 29.

Eleven students from Hamilton College, Western Connecticut College and Selkirk College are participating in a six-week intensive archaeology field immersion course in the prehistory, history, ethnography and language of the indigenous peoples of the interior Pacific Northwest. Program director, Assistant Professor of Anthropology Nathan Goodale was interviewed on “Radio West,” a program on CBC/Radio-Canada on July 6 about the field school and its goals. 

Three Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the college’s board of trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Joana Sabadell-Nieto (Hispanic Studies), Katherine Terrell (English) and Christopher Vasantkumar (anthropology).

An article written by several members of the Hamilton community was published in the May issue of The SAA Archaeological Record, the magazine of the Society for American Archaeology.

Associate Professor of Anthropology Chaise LaDousa and Hamilton seniors Paige Cross and Anna Zahm presented papers at the Northeastern Anthropological Association Conference.

Hamilton senior Anna Zahm, an anthropology/archaeology major, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Thailand.

Luce Junior Professor of Asian Studies and Anthropology Chris Vasantkumar is the author of an essay titled "Unmade in China: Reassembling the Ethnic on the Gansu-Tibetan Frontier" that has just been published by Ethnos: Journal of Anthropology.
