In an email to the Hamilton community, President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the death of Donald Brandreth Potter, professor of geology emeritus. He died on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at his home following complications from a fall.

“There will never, ever, be another you. There never has been, and there never will be.” The bold statement from Prudence Bushnell, former Ambassador to Kenya and Guatemala as well as the former Sol M. Linowitz Visiting Professor of International Relations at Hamilton College, set the tone for the diverse group of Hamilton students participating in the 4th annual Levitt Leadership Institute, Jan. 12-16.

When Hamilton dedicated the $46.8 million Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts as part of Fallcoming and Family Weekend in October, more than 3,000 alumni, parents and friends filled hotels, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants in Central New York. Constructing new facilities and hosting such celebratory weekends are two factors considered in a new economic impact study commissioned by the Albany-based Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) for its members.

Three Hamilton students have been selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) that will take place in March 6-8 at the University of Miami, Florida. Ryan Ong  ’16, Sharif Shrestha ’17 and Jose Vazquez ’15  will attend CGI U along with Tsion Tsefaye ’16 who was chosen in November.

Opinion pieces, letters to the editor, expert commentaries and studies, book reviews and special projects all contributed to Hamilton’s many appearances in the national media this year. From National Public Radio to The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, faculty and staff submissions and responses to media outlets made the college very visible.

Eight Hamilton students have received creativity grants from the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The 2014 recipients are Kate Bickmore ’15, Sean-Henry Smith ’15, Lesley Klose ’15, Sawyer Konys ’16, James Larson ’17, Megan O’Sullivan ’15, Caroline Rudd ’16, and Sara Wortman ’15.

Without a doubt, members of the Hamilton College men’s hockey team are tough.  Throughout the season, they face the rigors of the game, the physical stresses of practice and hard collisions, the mental challenges of balancing sport and school.  For the team, though hockey is a sport of fellowship.  It transcends simple competition, forming lifelong bonds based upon mutual respect and a love for the game. For Hamilton’s men’s hockey team, the Breaking Bread program epitomizes this concept.

Last year at this time (Heqing) Amy Zhang ’18 was a senior at Sheboygan Falls High School in Wisconsin. Little did she know then that a piece she wrote for a high school English assignment would within less than a year become a young-adult novel. Falling Into Place was published by Harper Collins in September.

Thousands of spectators filled the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House to hear Derek Jeter, five-time World Series champion and member of MLB’s 3,000-hit club, participate in a moderated question and answer session.

President Joan Hinde Stewart has announced her plan to retire on June 30, 2016, after 13 years leading the liberal arts college. Stewart informed members of the Hamilton Board of Trustees during their quarterly meeting Friday in New York City. When she concludes her presidency in 18 months, Stewart will be the eighth longest serving president in the College’s 200-year history.
