David Solomon ’84, co-head of Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs, returned to Hamilton on Oct. 2 and spoke with students on the role finance plays in the world. Solomon, who majored in government at Hamilton, described how finance had always fascinated and intrigued him because it “helps [him] put in perspective how the world is changing, and how all of those changes affect all of us and what we do.” 

Students in “U.S. Foreign Policy,” taught by Assistant Professor of Government Erica De Bruin, were granted a unique experience on Oct. 2 when three distinguished Foreign Service experts visited their class to field questions regarding U.S.-Russia relations and careers in the field.

For the past two decades, the Hamilton Outing Club has designated one fall weekend as 46 Peaks Weekend. The goal:  to put at least one Hamilton student on the summit of each and every one of the 46 mountains in the Adirondacks that are above 4,000 feet in elevation. This past weekend (Sept. 25-27) HOC succeeded in accomplishing this goal for the second time ever -- marking two years in a row that this achievement has been made.

Each September hundreds of paddlers take to the Adirondacks to paddle in the Adirondack Canoe Classic, also known as “The 90-Miler” or just “The 90.” For the past five years a dedicated group of Hamilton students have joined them and this year saw the College well represented with seven boats of Hamilton students entering into the race. Jillian Donze ’17 and Maggie Smith ’17 came in third in the women’s C2 Stock Class.

Elisabeth MacColl ’16 is on a career path that fortuitously started with a Cellular Neurobiology class she took at Hamilton with Professor of Biology Herm Lehman. The latest outcome is her publication of a paper in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. The paper, “Matrix Metalloproteinases as Regulators of Vein Structure and Function Implications in Chronic Venous Disease,” was written by MacColl and the PI Dr. Raouf A. Khalil of Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

On two gorgeous late summer nights, Hamilton student theatre group Bare Naked theatre presented Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, unveiling the Kennedy Center Amphitheatre.

Under the leadership of Visiting Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing Andrew Rippeon, first-year students in the Letterpress Printing and Book Arts Experience Adventure orientation group created a new honor code document that – from both tactile and visual perspectives – conveys the seriousness of its message. In a shift in tradition, the documents were distributed during convocation. After first-year students signed their copies, orientation leaders collected them and Honor Court Chair Taylor Elicegui ’17 presented them with Conor O’Shea ’18, a member of the court, to President Stewart.

Hamilton College welcomed the 475 members of its Class of 2019 on Tuesday, Aug. 18, for nine days of Orientation. See photos and video from Day One of Orientation.

“Private institutions have been at the forefront of the cause since Pell funding was stripped in 1994,” Doran Larson, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Ethics and Christian Evidences, said in a Chronicle of Higher Education article on reaction to President Obama’s pilot program to make some prisoners eligible for Pell Grants.
