Polly Roberts, professor of world arts and cultures/dance at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), will deliver a lecture on the display of sacred objects in a museum context on Thursday, April 17, at 4:15 p.m., in the Overlook of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art.

Professor of Music Lydia Hamessley presented a paper titled “‘Shattered Image’: Appalachian White-Trash Femininities in the Songs of Dolly Parton” at the annual meeting of the Society for American Music held March 5-9 in Lancaster, Pa.

When celebrated Indian street photographer Pranlal K. Patel died in January at the age of 104, he left behind an impressive legacy and 70 years worth of works. An exhibit at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art has brought new life to some of the artist’s images from the early twentieth century.

Ten Hamilton students interested in the art market visited Christie’s fine arts auction house in New York City on March 28. A massive, vibrant Sol LeWitt mural greeted attendees at Christie’s headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza and foreshadowed an exciting day. Mary Evans, director of Hamilton’s Career Center, remarked, “This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the art auction business in an internationally pre-eminent setting.”

A reception honoring Pranlal Patel’s son and grandson, who have traveled from India to view the Wellin Museum of Art exhibition “Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal K. Patel's photographs of women at Work in Ahmedabad,” will take place on Wednesday, April 2, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in the Wellin Museum. The public is invited to attend.

A collection of intaglio prints by Professors of Art Bruce Muirhead and William Salzillo, along with Amy Buchholz ’80 and Jake Muirhead ’86 – the Atelier Four – will be on display April 4-29 at The Ink Shop Printmaking Center in Ithaca, N.Y.

Tracy L. Adler, director of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, welcomed New York City alumni for a talk with artist Casey Ruble on March 7 at Volta NY. Ruble’s work was included in the museum’s fall exhibition A Sense of Place, which was curated by Adler.

“This room holds many ghosts,” Tony Award-winning playwright Richard Nelson ’72 said as he began his talk in the Chapel on Tuesday, March 11. “Ghosts in every corner.” Nelson delivered the Tolles lecture titled “The Peculiarity of Theater.”

Some people might not think of art as a force for social or political transformation, but one artist, Alfredo Jaar, has been evoking change through art for decades. On March 5, the Chilean-born and New York-based artist, architect, and filmmaker delivered a captivating two-hour lecture to the Hamilton community in a crowded Bradford Auditorium. His talk was part of the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series.

“Alluring Repulsions,” an exhibition of new sculptures by Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh, will be on display March 7 – April 3 at Hilles Gallery at the Creative Arts Workshop (CAW).  The show will open with a reception on March 7, from 5 – 7 p.m., at the gallery, located at 80 Audubon Street in New Haven, Conn.
