Three members of Hamilton’s economics department were invited to contribute chapters to the International Handbook on Teaching and Learning Economics, edited by Gail M. Hoyt and KimMarie McGoldrick.  Ann L. Owen, Stephen Wu and Elizabeth J. Jensen authored chapters.

An article titled “Study: Does enduring extreme weather make you vote liberal?,” appearing on the USA Today website on Dec. 30, reported on a study written by four Hamilton economists. Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen, Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover and Associate Professors of Economics Julio Videras and Stephen Wu co-authored the study, “Heat Waves, Droughts, and Preferences for Environmental Policy.” The Weather Channel also reported on the study on Jan. 2. 

Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu's paper "Well-Being Across America" (co-authored with Andrew Oswald, University of Warwick) has been published in the November 2011 issue of the Review of Economics and Statistics (volume 93, number 4, pages 1118-1134).

An article co-authored by Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu was published in the October issue of The Journal of Socio-Economics. “Fatalism and Savings,” written with Joel Shapiro of the University of Oxford, examines the impact of fatalism on the decision of whether or not to save.

Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu presented a paper and was a discussant of another paper at the Western Economic Association Annual Meeting, held in San Diego from June 30-July 2.  His paper titled "Are Pregnant Women Happier? Racial Differences in the Relationship Between Pregnancy and Life Satisfaction was part of a panel titled "The Economics of Happiness."

Four members of the Hamilton faculty were recognized for their research and creative successes through the Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards at Class & Charter Day on Friday, May 6. The awards were established in three categories by former Dean of Faculty Joe Urgo in 2008.

The happiest countries and happiest U.S. states tend to have the highest suicide rates, according to a study co-authored by Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu with Professor Andrew Oswald of the University of Warwick and researchers from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Both The New York Times and the Associated Press have released stories on the  research.

Hamilton College attracted the media’s attention quite often this year in feature stories and news reports. Among the areas most often addressed by the media in covering Hamilton were topics related to the admission process.

A paper co-authored by Professor of Economics and Director of the Levitt Public Affairs Center Ann  Owen and Associate Professors of Economics  Julio Videras and Stephen Wu was published in the December issue of Review of Social Economy. “Identity and Environmentalism: The Influence of Community Characteristics” examines the influence of community characteristics on self-proclaimed environmentalism.

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio in Albany will feature a reading by Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu on Monday, Aug. 23, as part of the public radio station’s Academic Minute. The new program airs each weekday at 7:37 a.m. and 3:56 p.m at 90.3 FM in the Clinton area.
