A new president, new and improved buildings, and a year’s worth of notable events marked the top news stories of 2024. Check out our most popular stories from the year.

“Creativity and innovation are in the DNA of Hamilton College,” says Steven Tepper, Hamilton's 21st president. “Our namesake and original trustee, Alexander Hamilton, was our nation’s creative founding father. Other founding fathers were content with borrowed models or sticking to the old agrarian order. Hamilton knew that a new nation needed new ideas. Ever since, the College’s history has been punctuated by moments of innovation and creativity and invention.”

Hamilton College faculty, staff, and alumni continued to make their mark in 2024 as thought leaders, with major national and international media outlets, as well as prominent higher education publications, seeking their expertise on a wide range of topics.

Sam Pitter ’07 recently added two “work experience” entries to her résumé — head swimming and diving coach at Miami University Ohio and assistant coach of the Cape Verde Olympic swimming team.

With their first semester at Hamilton now completed, members of the Class of 2028 took a moment to look back.

Pastry chef Stephen Durfee ’85 took dessert to the next level — and the next size — with the world’s largest s’more. The behemoth treat measured 49 square feet and weighed in at 396 pounds.

Not only did Associate Professor of Chemistry Max Majireck and 20 students and recent graduates from his lab co-author the peer-reviewed cover article for the Nov. 22, 2024, issue of Organic Letters, but one of those students – Chrissy Crespo ’25 – designed the cover.

National and regional news organizations regularly interview Hamilton faculty, staff, alumni, and students for their expertise and perspectives on current events, and to feature programs and activities on campus. November’s news topics included varied subjects from the Federal Reserve to election polling to awkward holiday situations.

Hamilton professor Charles Collett recently became a member of the College Choir, a group traditionally made up of student singers. He talked about rehearsing and performing, as well as his inspiration for joining.

Recent renovations to the beloved Sage Rink – with more enhancements to come – promise to elevate the experience for Hamilton Hockey, their loyal fans, and the wider community, ensuring that Sage’s legacy lives on for its next century.
