Event Description

Canonizing Controversy: The Cult of Thiemo of Salzburg and the Politics of Creating Saints in Medieval and Early Modern Europe   What happens when a church tries to create a saint...and fails? In this presentation, John Eldevik will discuss his recent research on the cult of St. Thiemo of Salzburg (d. 1101) in the archives of the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints and at the monastery of St. Peter's in Salzburg that document several attempts to officially canonize a peculiar medieval saint between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries and reveal the fascinating inner workings of the research and argumentation that went into a petition to officially elevate an individual into the ranks of the church's elect.
