The Office of Sustainability seeks to adopt alternative methods of traditional transportation to help Hamilton reach its carbon neutrality goal of 2030.

Electric Vehicles (EV)

Hamilton’s EV& charging infrastructure is pivotal in meeting the rising demand for electric vehicles. Currently providing 18 public ChargePoint Level 2 charging stations, the College is committed to further expansion to cater to the growing needs of EV users. These stations can charge an all-electric vehicle from empty to 80 percent in 4-10 hours and a plug-in hybrid EV in 1-2 hours, and are strategically located throughout the campus, ensuring accessibility and convenience for drivers embracing sustainable mobility.

EV Station Locations

  • Siuda House (reserved for admission guests)
  • Burke Library
  • Scott Field House
  • Anderson-Connell Alumni Center
  • Babbitt Pavilion
  • Ferguson House

How to Use the Charging Stations

  1. Download the App: EV owners will need to establish a ChargePoint account by downloading the app. Go to your smartphone's app store (Google Play Store for Android or Apple App Store for iOS) and search for "ChargePoint." Download and install the app on your phone.
  2. Create an Account: Open the ChargePoint app and follow the prompts to create a new account. You'll need to provide some basic information such as your email address, name, and create a password.
  3. Access the Station: When you arrive at the charging station, open the ChargePoint app and hold your phone over the station's RFID reader. This will authenticate your account and allow you to use the station.
  4. Plug in Your Car: After you've accessed the station, plug your electric vehicle into the charging port using the appropriate connector.
  5. Start Charging: Once your car is plugged in, the charging session will begin automatically. You can monitor the progress of the charging session in the app.
  6. Receive Alerts: The ChargePoint app will alert you when your car is fully charged or if there are any issues with the charging session.

If you have any questions or encounter any difficulties, please contact ChargePoint customer support for assistance.

Rates & Time Limits

  • Users are charged a flat rate of $0.20 per kWh (approximately $5 for a 4-hour charging session), with no additional connection fees. (Updated June 2024)
  • A four-hour time limit is in place to ensure stations remain widely available to the community.
  • To discourage vehicles from exceeding this time limit, users are assessed a penalty of $5/hour beyond the initial four hours. The ChargePoint app will push notifications to users when they have reached the time limit. Charging rates and penalties will be re-evaluated on an annual basis.

College Transportation

In the upcoming years, Hamilton will strive to advertise and expand opportunities for electric vehicle charging, develop a comprehensive plan for gradual fleet electrification, and develop campus-wide strategies on the climate impacts of travel decisions that encourage a reduction in unnecessary travel. The Transportation office purchased two hybrid vehicles during the fall of 2023 and will continue to invest in green transportation.
