Jonathan Overpeck ’79, one of the nation’s leading experts on climate change, has been appointed the inaugural dean of the University of Michigan (U-M) School for Environment and Sustainability.

Four Hamilton faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Rob Knight, art, Chinthaka Kuruwita, mathematics, and Xavier Tubau, Hispanic studies. With the granting of tenure comes the title of associate professor.

More than 1,100 alumni and guests are registered for Reunions ’17, taking place this year on June 8-11. There’s still time to register for the weekend that promises a full slate of activities and many opportunities to reminisce with classmates and friends.

Eleven members of Hamilton’s Class of 2017 will be joining Teach for America. Teach For America is a selective non-profit that gives the nation’s top leaders an opportunity to impact social inequity from the head of a classroom. As teachers, its corps members work in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty.

Andre Burnham ‘18 and Michael Valeri ‘19 have been awarded Coccia Foundation Scholarships for study abroad in Italy. The Foundation was established in 1994 by Cavaliere Joseph Coccia, Jr., and his wife Elda. The organization is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Italian culture, with a particular emphasis on promoting the rich Italian cultural heritage among younger generations at the college level.

In his address at Hamilton’s commencement Baker shared five observations with the Class of 2017, reminding them that “discussing differences is not a war, it’s a conversation. There can always be more than one point of view.”

Victoria Bullivant ’18 has been awarded the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). She will study Arabic will study in Amman, Jordan.

Recipients of the 2017 Emerson Summer Grants were recently announced. Created in 1997, the Emerson Foundation Grant program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. Twenty-eight Hamilton students and 25 faculty members will work on the following projects this summer. The students will make public presentations of their research throughout the academic year.
