A group of Hamilton students in the Sign Language and Deaf Culture class and students from New York State School for the Deaf (NYSSD) met on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Wellin Museum of Art to view and discuss various pieces of art. The Hamilton students were fulfilling a class assignment for their course taught by Lecturer in the Education Studies Program Vicky Allen.

Hamilton College is one of 25 schools selected by The Acting Company to participate in a new national consortium-based performance and education initiative comprised of universities, colleges, public/private high schools and community organizations.  Each consortium will offer professional development opportunities with playwrights, actors, designers, directors and educators over the next three years.

With the gleaming new Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts as its centerpiece, the combined Fallcoming and Family Weekend celebrated the arts over three days of glorious Central New York autumn weather.

Describing the function of art is nearly as difficult as defining it. Both the purpose and objective of art are fluid concepts, changing based on the perspective and context of those viewing it. More than anything, though, art is powerful, holding within itself the capacity for great change. It is effectively an insurgent: a catalyst capable of causing social and cultural advancement from within an institution itself.

Hamilton welcomed Yale Professor and Art School Dean Robert Storr to campus to give the Celebration of the Arts opening address in one of the first events of Fallcoming/Family Weekend on Oct. 9. It was one of many to celebrate the dedication of The Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theater and the Studio Arts (KTSA).

Hamilton’s combined Fallcoming and Family Weekend, Oct. 9-12, will celebrate the arts with a number of exciting events including the dedication of The Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts, the opening of the new Alyson Shotz exhibit in the Wellin Museum, and addresses by national leaders in the arts world.

Hamilton College’s Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art presents “Alyson Shotz: Force of Nature” opening Saturday, Oct. 11, from 4 – 6 p.m. This eponymous exhibition features new and recent work by Alyson Shotz, an abstract artist who creates monumental sculptures, photo-collages and installations. Preceding the opening reception, Shotz will discuss her work from 3 – 4 p.m. in the museum. The exhibition, opening and artist’s talk are free and open to the public.

Among the opportunities that the Hamilton Art Department provides its students is the annual New York City Artist’s Studio Tour. On Sept. 11-13, the senior art concentrators, led by professors Katherine Kuharic, Robert Knight and Rebecca Murtaugh, ventured to New York City to visit the studios, galleries and homes of five practicing artists.

John McEnroe's article, "The Final Palace at Knossos," was recently published by the Canadian Institute in Greece in Meditations on the Built Environment in the Aegean Basin. The volume presents the proceedings of a colloquium held in Athens to honor the eminent Canadian architectural historian, Frederick E. Winter. McEnroe is the John and Anne Fischer Professor of Fine Arts.

Although processing clay may not sound like the most amusing way to spend the summer, Lesley Klose ’15, an art major with a focus on sculpture, is enjoying her time at the Red Dirt Studio in Mt. Rainier, Maryland, nonetheless. Her summer project is made possible through the support of the Kevin W. Kennedy ’70 Internship Fund for the Arts.
