Robert Lee Barnes '57

Robert Lee Barnes ’57 died on Aug. 7, 2022, in Basking Ridge, N.J. Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., on Aug. 1, 1935, he was raised in nearby Lewiston, N.Y., and came to Hamilton from Lewiston-Porter Central High School. 

On the Hill, he majored in chemistry and joined Sigma Phi fraternity. Bob sang in the College Choir all four years, managed the swim team from his sophomore through his senior years, and was a member of the Block “H” Club. He was also in the International Relations Club during his first and second years, the French Club as a sophomore, and participated in the Campus Fund. He was elected to Pentagon as a senior.

After Hamilton, Bob began graduate studies in chemistry at Pennsylvania State University in College Park, Pa., where he earned his master's degree in 1960 and his doctorate in 1963. As a result of his academic achievement, he was admitted to Phi Lambda Upsilon, the National Honorary Chemical Society. From Penn State, he proceeded to Harvard University as a postdoctoral research fellow from 1963 to 1965. In 1966, he met Barbara Gross, with whom he worked at Singer General Precision Equipment Corp. They were married in Clifton, N.J., on May 6, 1967, and stayed together for 44 years, until her death.

During the course of a 33-year career as a consulting chemist, Bob worked for several corporations located in the greater New York City region. In addition to Singer, he held positions at Case Consulting Laboratories, the Foster D. Snell Division of Booz Allen Hamilton, the United States Testing Co., and the Kearfott Division of Singer General Technical Services. Thereafter, he became director of Worldwide Technical Services for Bristol-Myers Squibb. He retired in 1998.

Bob was a member of the American Chemical Society, the New Jersey Pharmaceutical Quality Control Association, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. While residing in Morristown, N.J., he was an elder of the Morristown Presbyterian Church. Bob served Hamilton as a member of his class committee and reunion gift committee, and was a Joel Bristol Associate. 

Robert L. Barnes is survived by his sister.
