Captain Dale ’42

We of the Faculty would record our senses of personal loss which we share with our colleague, Professor Dale, in the death of his son, Captain Nelson C. Dale, Jr., Hamilton ’42, who on the 22nd of April succumbed to wounds received at Okinawa.
Captain Dale grew up in this community, where young and old alike admired him for what he did and loved him for what he was. This high recognition he gained without effort and held without pretension, for he was always modest, courteous, and considerate. Especially will those of us who watched him grow from childhood to man’s estate remember his rare qualities of heart and spirit which somehow made it impossible for him to outgrow the affectionate nickname of Sunny Dale. The same fine traits which he showed in his life on the Hill he carried with him through three grueling years of active service with the Marines; and he remained the same fine lad, unsullied and unspoiled. We grieve that this young alumnus who held so high a place in so many hearts has been taken away thus untimely. He set us an example of forthright character, devotion to duty, and patient fortitude through many months of suffering, and he gave his life for his country.
We would place this memorial of our esteem in our minutes and send a copy to Professor Dale and the members of his family, to all of whom we offer our deep sympathy.
