If you’ve been away from Hamilton’s news site this summer you’ve missed a lot! Many students kept academics at the top of their summer “To-Do” list by collaborating on research projects with faculty. Others explored possible careers through internships supported by the College. See some highlights below and read news stories about summer research and internships here.

In January, three Hamilton students abandoned the frosty Upstate New York winter for the tropical climate of Nevis, the Caribbean birthplace of the College’s namesake Alexander Hamilton.

Her Hamilton-funded research project took her to Belize. Savannah Kelly ’21 looked at the effects of the Guatemala-Belize border dispute on Belize’s indigenous communities.

Nicholas Walters ’20 spent the summer conducting research about the impact of medieval and Renaissance music on more modern pieces. With the aid of his adviser, he will write an essay that reflects his research and academic interests.

While governmental use of technology to monitor and manage citizens may seem like something straight out of an Orwellian novel, Joel Harper ’21 knows that “high-tech tools” are used by governments all around the world.

The Chemistry Department recently hosted organic chemistry students and faculty from Colgate University and Hobart and William Smith Colleges for SmORS, the annual Summer Organic Research Symposium.

While scientists know that methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to the climate crisis, there is still uncertainty surrounding where all the methane in the atmosphere comes from. This summer Emely Chacon ’22, Lucille Kline ’22, and Pauline Santry ’21 traversed both wetlands and the village of Clinton to gather data on methane sources, better understand methane production, and find potential answers to the methane mystery.

With a grant from Hamilton, Zachary Deming ’20 spent a summer immersed in an academic passion he expects he'll carry with him into grad school or whatever comes after College.

As a premed student Maya Amy ’20 has spent hours immersed in science research, including a summer of teamwork with Assistant Professor of Biology Cynthia Downs and other students. That resulted in Amy being listed among the co-authors on a scholarly paper. This summer, she’s working on research that requires a new set of skills.
