Motivated by MacLennan and a desire to support students

On March 7, 2020, just before COVID-19 was declared a worldwide pandemic, Hamilton launched a new initiative to increase the number of endowed funds for student financial aid. Scholarship aid was the top priority in the Because Hamilton campaign, which closed in June 2023.

Led by an estate gift from James MacLennan ’58, a longtime supporter of financial aid at Hamilton, a $12 million pool of funds was created to match, one-to-one, every newly established scholarship endowment, as well as additions to existing funds.

Given the inauspicious timing of the launch, success was not assured, but alumni, parents, and friends responded generously and enthusiastically. Within six months, more than 60 new funds were established — an average of 10 new endowed scholarship funds per month! On June 30, 2022, that number totaled 104. (Before MacLennan, the average number of new endowed scholarships per year averaged 12.)

Instead of the usual base gift of $100,000 to endow a named scholarship, donors could create one with a $50,000 gift that is then matched with MacLennan funds. Donors who never thought they could create a scholarship legacy at Hamilton were now able to. They ranged in age from 29 to 93, or in class terms, from the Class of 1950 to the Class of 2014. In addition, there were 21 new scholarships created by groups of donors honoring classmates and professors. All told, more than 1,000 donors made a new commitment and participated in this extraordinary opportunity to help keep a Hamilton education accessible to students earning admission.
